Hello,

I am sure this is an easily answered question by anyone that is familiar with A/V equipment which I am just getting into, but here is my question.

Equipment I need to connect-

Denon AVR-3806 with direct TV HD receiver and a Panasonic PZ700 plasma.

I want to use HDMI and digital audio because the HDMI does not allow sound.

What do I hook to where PLEASE help me learn.

Shawn,

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

We can certainly get you set up, but I'd like to understand a little better. HDMI carries both digital video and digital audio. I looked through the owner's manual for the Denon 3806, and it is able to process the audio signal from an HDMI input.

Have you hooked up the components with HDMI and are not getting any sound? Were you just assuming that HDMI didn't carry sound?

Thanks.

Hello Adam,

I did hook it up HDMI and got no sound then asked around and was told some receivers did not carry audio and would need an optical digital cable for the best audio.

My receiver is the Denon AVR-3806

thanks

Shawn,

Okay. Let's see if we can get you all set up. It's true that some receivers cannot process the audio from HDMI, but your receiver can. That said, there are definitely ways to send the audio on a separate line and have your receiver use it. I'm going to be referencing your owner's manual for the 3806, so in case you don't have it handy, you can download it from Denon at the link here.

I'll poke at one other possibility, because I didn't ask it last time. Are you getting no sound over HDMI on the Denon, or on the TV? I want to ask because you can't have both. In the receiver's menus, you select if you want the Denon to process the audio from HDMI or to pass it on to the TV. It can't do both of those. Setting this up is described on page 66 of the manual, specifically under item "4" of the "Video Setup" section. This might be your issue.

If that doesn't help you out, then you can connect another digital audio line from the DirecTV receiver to the 3806. You can use either an optical or digital coax connection, whichever your DirecTV receiver has. If it has both, then use either one. Once done, you need to assign that input (in other words, tell the Denon which jack on the back of the unit you used for the DirecTV input). This is covered on page 63 of your owner's manual.

These are just a few things to get the ball rolling. Please let us know if this has solved your problem, or if you still need additional help in getting it all set up the way that you want.

Thanks for the advice. I think You pointed out the problem in your instructions. I do not have external main speakers connected yet thinking I could use the TV as mains and my rear surrounds through the receiver which now I think may not be possible.

I think that you could get that to work. You just can't do it all through the HDMI cable.

What sort of audio inputs does your TV have? If you are uncertain, you can tell us the model number and we'll look it up.

I have the Panasonic PZ700U
Ahh, I see that you said that in your first post.

Let me take a look at that. I might not post again until tomorrow morning, though. It's getting late here.
