Hi all,

Just got my new TV and, I believe it's time for Blu-Ray. I have been really really happy with my Oppo 980, wich will be moved to my bedroom. For the new player I settled on the PS3, even not being a gamer nor 'in love' with its looks. Now, I can't find enough information/details on SACD capability, I did search here and google and came up with a bunch of Yes and No's ... I'm confused . I bought some SACD's and I'd like to use them on my main system. So, could someone tell me wich one to buy ? If you guys have links would be awesome.

Thank you all very much, have a great holiday weekend!

The 40g PS3 does not play SACD. The 80g will but since it can only output SACD over HDMI, you will need a receiver with at least HDMI v1.2 or higher.

Be warned, Sony has recently released a new 80gb PS3 model that is essentially the old 40gb model with a bigger hard drive. It is priced at $399 MSRP and does not support SACD (nor can it play PS2 games, though I don't think you're concerned about that). As $399 was also the price of the 40gb model, it's likely that the 40gb model is going to be phased out.

Confusingly, Sony is apparently going to release an 120gb model in October that is also a clone of the 40gb model (i.e. no PS2 or SACD compatibility).

You want the "old" 80gb model, which you will likely find bundled with Metal Gear Solid 4 and priced at $599 MSRP. If you search for "Playstation 3" on Circuitcity.com, for example, you'll see they carry both 80gb versions of the system right now.

An old 20gb or 60gb model would also do, but you'd have to find that second-hand as those versions are long discontinued.

Wikipedia actually has a nice summary of the myriad of different PS3 models Sony has put out. It's under "Retail Configurations" in their PS3 article.

On the plus side, the PS3 really is a great blu-ray player and a very good standard DVD upscaler. Just make sure you do all the updates, whichever model you buy. Hope that helps.

I didn't know that they released a new 80g like that. I'm glad you mentioned that.

Thanks Guys.

That's weird, I mean, they only have one manual for 80gb on their website.

Check the overviews at PS3SACD.com

Buy the 60GB model or the original 80 GB model but be careful: there's a new 80GB model that's not SACD-compatible!

ETA: just noticed Newtype already wrote that. One correction to his mail: the next model will be 160GB, not 120.

From what I've read, Transformers shouldn't disappoint. Just got released today, I believe.

Yes, released today, and gets high marks for both audio and video. I just picked it up, but won't have a chance to watch it until tonight. It depends on what you like to watch; there are plenty of great titles.

Just throw in Metal Gear - that has sound that is as good as if not better than most movies.

From a recent thread here on the Transformers Blu-ray, it seems like the sound might not be anything spectacular. I thought that it was great on the regular DVD. Just a note for ya, not a suggestion to skip the movie. I think that you'll still find it pretty cool. If you haven't seen the movie, it's definitely worth watching, IMO. I liked it a lot.
