Speakers for a girlfriend

My girlfriend does not have a stereo (just an ipod and her computer speakers.) I intend to surprise her by giving her one of my old systems.

My Alesis Monitor Ones are big and butt-ugly, but have outstanding performance. My Cambridge S30s are much smaller and prettier, with generally nice sound, but a tad lacking in bass and dynamics.

Am I correct in assuming that small and pretty wins the day, so that the S30s would be the better choice?

Small and pretty wins the day, but buy a new set. NIB is going to have more sex appeal. Don't forget she needs power too.:D

My S30s are mint, and I have the original packaging. She will never guess that they are not brand new.
The electronics will be an Onkyo shelf system (C315, I think.) I never had the box for it, but it is also in mint condition. (I haven't been with her long enough yet to start buying new stuff for her!)

So are you saying that you change gf's more often than your speakers:p. JK:D

If you are only picking between the speakers you have and not buying new, go with the cambridge. A balance between aesthestics and performance is probably preferred over just performance. If you refer to them as big and butt ugly, what is she going to think. I think these 3 criteria are most important.

1) They have to look nice
2) Generally small footprint
3) Performance - Don't go out and buy those cubes for her for godssakes joe:p.

Thank you, gentlemen. You have confirmed what I thought, but it was worth checking. I have some Omnimount stands with wood inlays that the S30s look especially nice on, so that will further sweeten the package.

Give her your BP8s

j/k give her the small ones.
The funny thing is, I actually considered that. They are currently being used as surrounds, and the Alesises are good enough for surround duty. Unlike the Cambridges, however, they do not look new (and the piano black shows scratches badly.)

I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship (as Schmoe hands over his speakers)...

You can always get new socks and end caps from Def Tech, then they will look brand new.

My wife, nor any girlfriend I ever had, ever had a true appreciation for the equipment. Go with the Cambridge.

About 10 years ago, my ex-fiance looked at me and said, there's no difference between a $20,000 stereo and a $200 one. I looked at her and said I'll keep that philosphy in mind when I buy your engagment ring. :D

We all know what women want - DIAMONDS.

Most women don't care about stereo and speakers.

Definitely not WORTH buying a NEW system, unless it's a $100 system.:D

Dang it, I thought you were willing to trade one of our girlfriends for your speakers. I was all in on this one!
