i'm gonna be purchasing the logitech z5500 and pairing it with the ASUS Xonar DX 7.1 the inputs on the card are..

Analog Output Jack:
3.50mm mini jack *4 (Front/Side/Center-Subwoofer/Back)

Analog Input Jack:
3.50mm mini jack *1 (Shared by Line-In/Mic-In)

Other line-level analog input (for TV Tuner or CD-ROM):
Aux-In (4-pin header on the card)

Digital S/PDIF Output
High-bandwidth TOS-Link optical transmitter (shared with Line-In/Mic-In jack) supports 192KHz/24bit

what input/cable should i use for the best quality? thanks

The ASUS can decode some codecs that the Logitech system cannot, as well as doing some audio processing (especially for video games), so my recommendation is to use the analog connections. With the Logitech Z-5500, you'd only be connecting the front/center-subwoofer/back connections because it's only a 5.1 speaker system.

The Z-5500 will come with the 6-channel analog cable in the box.

Thanks for the quick reply..also a couple things i forgot to ask..would it be a better idea to go with a 5.1 card? or stick with7.1? also is the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty better or worse than the xonar? i'm not too familiar with all the soundcard lingo so i really don't know what to and what not to look for

I'm not that up on sound cards these days, so hopefully someone who is will chime in (I'd like to learn, too). I would normally just go by the customer reviews of the cards to make up my mind on which would be a good one to get.

As for 7.1 versus 5.1, I think that just depends on if you want to run a 7.1 speaker system. I don't think that it would hurt to get the 7.1 card with a 5.1 speaker system, as you'd just have extra capability.

i've decided to go with the AuzenTech AZT-XPCINE 7.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz PCI Interface X-Plosion 7.1 Cinema Audio Card..since it's a good card for movies and music..i guess hooking this up via optical (cable pictured below)would make the best quality?

Just make sure that cable will plug in! I'm in a rush at the moment, but I'll check later. The card looks to have the same sort of dual optical/headphone jack that Macs use - with those, you need an adapter to plug a regular optical cable into them. I'll track that down for you if I see that it needs it - I bought one for my MacBook.

Oops, my bad. I was in such a hurry that I misread your post and thought that you were getting that ASUS Xonar card. With the AuzenTech, you're good to go with that cable.

Sorry for the confusion!
