Funny story related to drinking:

Last weekend we were at happy hour and the guy next to me kept talking to me, he was interesting and you could just tell he had money. His wife and mine hit it off and we ended up partying with them for a good amount of time. We started talking about HT stuff and he asked if I could check out his stereo as only one speaker worked. I went over to his house, where it bacame obvious that he has an ungodly amount of money, and evaluated his set-up. After I connected the speaker wire that wasn't hooked up on his right speaker, everything worked just fine. He praised me on and on and the offered any of his services to me for free. Turns out he remods homes with a speciality of building HT rooms. He said he doesnt have a clue about the equipement but he builds awesome rooms. I looked at some of the work he has done and it is really nice. As a tester, he is redoing my bar area with granite counter tops for free (he says it's payment for me fixing his stereo) This could get interesting!
I really need to move down to Texas to be near all these cool people you're hanging out with!:D

So what kind of speakers and components does this rich guy own?

He probably has Bose and thinks they are the greatest thing since sliced bread.

I don't think you are too far into your cups here Greg, but some will think you are.

You have found a truth. The whole concept behind the two programs mentioned here, Crapo and Odity are bogus. They are quality spoilers pure and simple, no if and buts. Now that should create a fire.

However I was taught you never EQ a room to flat. Even further I was taught it is audio vandalism. Most of the worst loudspeaker faults can not be equalized away, and in fact often exacerbated with EQ.

The reason is simple our hearing is conditioned to hear the room. If you had live instrumentalists in your room, unless the room was very odd, then it would sound good. your speakers should too.

If a set of speakers sound bad, in a room, that is not highly unusual they are bad speakers. I have confirmed again and again, that good speakers are not fussy about the room they are in. My rooms have usual standard treatments without hanging anything exotic, or placing unusual objects. I just use dimensions, carpet, windows pictures and furnishings. Unless your room is a real dog, that is all you need.

I have received many comments that my space needs treatments. I can assure you it does not, it is a wonderful sounding stace. Any EQ or funny hangings or objects would ruin it.
Yeah, I agree 100% here.:D

Use "Straight" mode to avoid any Room EQs and Tone Controls altogether.

I noticed that some speakers (Revel Salon2, Bang Olufson BeoLab 5) actually have EQs or DSPs in them? What do you think about that?

Now that is what I was looking for.

THANKS!
With Yamaha receivers they do the following:

Straight mode: signal is unprocessed from source but crossover is active thus you have sub working. Also video through the HDMI works as well.

Pure Direct: Signal is unprocessed, HDMI video is turned off, all amplification except for the fronts is turned off.

So basically you have two options:

If you are using an SACD player through HDMI, in straight mode you can do multichannel SACD. Considering the DAC on your receiver is DSD discrete if you have a compatible player this is the way to go.

If you are doing 2ch SACD you can do pure direct except you can only get 2ch.

Straight is the same as Pure Direct except you can do 5.1, and video will work through the HDMI. Now there is also Stereo mode which will work the same as straight mode in 2ch except you can use EQ.

Straight mode - up to 7.1, crossover active, no EQ, full HDMI function
Pure Direct - 2ch, crossover inactive, only FL/FR amps on, no EQ, HDMI off
Stereo - 2.1, only FL/FR amps on, crossover active, EQ, full HDMI function

Oh, I agree. I have been checking out some of his work and all seems to be legit. It looks like he mainly buys houses and flips them. I have been in two of his houses now and I will keep investigating, Carolyn says she has a gut feeling that something is wrong so I may just go with her gut.
Alright, I'm naturally paranoid and tend not to trust anything that is too good to be true. So, take the following in the that light. My advice - just be careful with this guy if you don't already know him. Seems odd that he couldn't figure out that the speaker wire wasn't connected, given that the other one was. He then offers to give you free granite countertops (installed, even). Seems like he might need a key to your house for that. If I wasn't wary already, I'd be at that point.

That said - if it's on the up-and-up, congrats! That would be quite a score.

I seem to like plain old 2 channel with no processing but then again, my speakers are WAY better than yours! (ha,ha);)

I have no idea how your response fits into my question but thanks anyway.

OK, how about this scenario:

For HT purposes I have my speakers set to 'small'.
What happens when I listen to a CD in stereo?
Do they change back to 'large' automatically?
I'll have to go check later. Was just wondering what the general consensus was.

I think "Pure Direct" will change speakers to Large, but "Straight", "Direct", & "Stereo" modes will keep the speakers Small.

Pure Direct will change the mains to large and turn everything off except the front amps. Pure Direct is like using an integrated amplifier with no EQ and no sub outs. Also Pure Direct will have more power to the mains on tap if needed as the power supply only has to power the two front amps.

Straight and Stereo will use everything the receiver has in terms of connections, DAC, EQ, crossover, calibration (Audessey, YPAO, etc).
