Thoughts on Monitor audio?

I'm planning on purchasing the Bronze BR5 floorstanding speakers and was wondering if anyone has heard them next to energy RC-30's or Polk Rti A5's or any other sub $600 range speaker.

Monitor Audio is a very good speaker company. Excellent build quality, and value.

Have you auditioned the speakers you've mentioned? Which one did you prefer?

No comment on the Polk or Energy. I'm pretty familiar with the BR line of MA, both the B2 and towers. They are a good value IMO. Finish could be sexier, IMO, and once you jump to RS line, that wish is fulfilled. FWIW, I know someone who got RS6 new for $800 or less.

I've heard the BR towers and Ascend 170 SE bookshelves in the same room. I definitely prefer the Ascend if only for the imaging and soundstage. $350ish. Add sub, voila.

There are a few people on this forum that own/owned MA speakers. I have heard nothing but great things about their products.

I've spent years trying to find inexpensive speakers that filled my needs. I like big combined orchestra/choral music. Most inexpensive speakers don't do the choral part of that type music justice. I've found the Monitor Audio Bronze to be voiced well for that kind of music. I listened to the PSB for years before I was turned on to Monitor Audio. I still think the PSB is probably a better alround speaker, but the Monitor Audio sound fits what I like to listen to better.

I've auditioned them again today and decided that they match my needs of HT and music equally. They also match my price range at $650 a pair. They seem to have a lighter bottom end than RC-30's from energy, which is more of my taste as i use a sub.

and at jostenmeat;

pm me where these speakers are :)

Did you audition them against any higher end speakers like the Silver series?

yes i heard the silver, a little bit expensive but a little nicer all-round when it comes to music listening. The price i got on RS6's was $1150 which is a little much on a students budget :)

So you like the sound of the Silver series better. Why I'm asking is to see if you have found "the sound qualities" you like best in a speaker. There might be a speaker with the sound qualities you like in your budget that someone can recommend.

Ok, to explain where I'm coming from. I can't believe I will type as much as I think I will to help you spend a few hundred dollars.

Before I forget, please call Saturday Audio and DMC electronics for pricing. Then check out Audiogon. Search functions are extremely helpful there, too. Ascend is internet direct.

I bought Bronze speakers as gifts to two of my closest friends. I've known both since high school. One has multiple degrees in classical music performance, like myself, but we went to different schools. We have a project in the works, to form a string quartet, and he wants to be performing within the next five years. My gift of MA towers to his family was as a combination of wedding (I was groomsman), baby-shower, & house-warming all rolled into one. The other recipient is an artist who has given me some wonderful works. Her last piece sold for 10k. (Though she's still a starving artist). The three of us, along with a couple of others, were involved in a pretty intense book club for a few years. My newfound and insane addiction to AV had me quit. They didn't want to continue without me, unfortunately. Can you believe it? At least they are members of my on-going movie club. :D

I just listened to the BR monitors at the artist's place last night, as I was there for a going away party for a mutual friend. She's got to go back to Carnegie Mellon to continue teaching philosophy. They are excellent for the money, just as I felt when auditioning for gifts. I feel they are "warmer" than the PSBs I use in my HT. Perhaps most barely more veiled, but yet possibly easier on the ears, but can't crank like PSB Images. However, they are MUCH more similar than dissimilar, IMO. Looks are a push. OTOH, none of the aforementioned, the Ascends included, have the clarity of my pricey electrostats, IMO. I am big choral lover as well, as with John Bailey. Particularly renaissance fare, a la Josquin, Ockeghem, Gesualdo, Tallis, and so forth. Newer stuff too, whether Martin or Stravinsky.

So... my musician friend asked me for advice on purchasing a pair. I gave him a HUUUUGE audition list, with my particular impressions, and if I never heard them, with particular reputations. Now, I've read of Ascend before, no doubt, but you should search WmAx's posts regarding these speakers. Intereseting stuff. Welp, my friend had said he's gonna find out on his own. Pride if you will, heck, he has great ears. When he realized how much time and research it would take, he just realized he should trust me, for better or worse.

So he pulled the trigger during a sale. Here were my preliminary impressions, post #12.

The one knock I have was some lack of definition in the midbass. It could be cabinet resonances, or my friend's close placement to sidewalls with complete lack of treatments, or both.

Hope that helps, please continue listening and reading, and, well... good luck.

That is high praise indeed! That sort of music really is the top of the mountain for a speaker torture test. How many speakers can produce an even vaguely pleasurable experience playing that music, precious few. A speaker that really grabs and moves you in those colossal moments is very rare bird indeed. That's why I had to build my own. Scenes like the Demon's chorus in the dream of Gerontious and the Dies Ire in the Verdi Requiem immediately come to mind. A modestly priced speaker that will do a creditable job, should be on the endangered species list!

If you live anywhere near the DFW (TX) area, I may could get the RS6s for 650 bucks.

I upgraded recently from RS6 to GS60...man, I think I'll be able to avoid another speaker purchase for quite a while!! Wasn't expecting it, but I have become a fan of Monitor Audio speakers...

I'd like to clarify, that like TLS Guy says, this type music is the toughest to recreate and I hope I didn't suggest that the MA Bronze were great at this. They are adequate at best and I've found them to be the best for this type music for inexpensive speakers. My overall opinion is they are the best compromise for inexpensive speakers while being a great value. I think that electrostats and planars are the way to go to really get a satisfying experience with the big orchestral/choral music.

All,

I have a pair of RS6's and all I can say is I love the clarity and the smooth sweet sound they produce.

I do want to add a sub to reduce the work the woofer is having to do and to extend the bass. I'm not trying to create thunder in my room, just clean low frequencies for music listening.

Can you share your setups? and recommendations? I have a 3,000 cu ft room and a budget of about $600 including shipping.

Thanks for your help!

I've had a MA RS6 surround setup for 5 years now, and am very happy with their performance and looks. I auditioned quite a few competitors at the time, but always returned to the MAs.
