Good deal on Axioms?

Hi all,

Yet another newbie trying to get a first system put together. I've been lurking here for a few weeks and trying to educate myself as best I can, but there really isn't any substitute for experience and I've reached the point where I want to get started with something.

I came across a deal on the following set of of Axiom speakers:

M22 (ti's ?) - fronts
Q4 - surrounds
VP-150 center

Price is $650 which seems attractive enough to me to violate rule #1 about never buying speakers until you've auditioned them, but I cannot hear these in a working system. Owner is not a scammer and I trust that they are in working order, but that's about it. My reasoning is that for the same $650 (which is about my budget) I'm highly unlikely to find anything better, but I thought I would test my posting ability and consult the group mind on this.

BTW, I don't have a receiver yet either, but am leaning heavily toward the Denon 1909/789 as my first choice.

TIA.

Thats about half price so it seems like a good deal if they are in good condition. How old are they?

They are two years old. If they look at all not well-cared for, I'll pass on them.

That is an awesome deal if they are in good working order. I own the M3 and QS4 surrounds and love them dearly. The axioms have a 5 year warranty, ask the seller if the speakers are registered, I would then email axiom and see if the warranty will be transerable to you if you would purchase them.

Got 'em !

I went over to check them out this morning--turns out the seller is only about 2 miles from my place. The speakers look perfect, no blemishes whatsoever AND it turned out the M22's are the V2 (latest?) model and not the earlier ti's that I thought. So I bought them. He had a Polk RM6000 which is a very inexpensive sub that he threw in for $25, so I'll have something to get started with.

He also included a box very high-quality cables for hooking everything up and the Axiom wall-mount brackets.

He is having a "fire sale" on his whole system, which includes an older Sony WEGA 50" LCD RP TV and an Outlaw 7075 amp and 970 pre/pro. He said $300 for the Outlaws and maybe $700 for the TV, but I think I'm going to stick with my plan to get a Denon 1909/Yamaha 663 or possibly something a little better. He confessed that the Outlaw pre/pro was pretty finiky and out of date. The TV actually look pretty darn nice, though so I might consider that as at least an interim solution.

I'd better keep moving so I can hook up these Axioms to something and see what I've got here. :)

Ha! TheBear and me are jealous 'cause you got such a good deal.

Thats a good suggestion for a receiver Jamie. It will drive those speakers nicely at such a sweet price point.

Not to send this thread off in completely new direction...BUT.... Why the Yamaha 663 over the Denon1909? They seem pretty similar spec-wise and the 1909 has the Audyssey dynamic room EQ and some kind of volume sensor that keeps a source at a constant volume. I'm completely open to buying whichever fits my needs best and go back and forth depending on what I read each day! I wish there were someplace I could hear them both. I suppose I could buy them both and return the one I liked least! I did audition a Denon vs. a Pioneer at the BB Magnolia room and each receiver did have a bit of a different sound with the same set of speakers. But they don't carry the Yamaha, or at least I didn't see one there.
