Hey all! I know this is not the best way to start out by being a newb to the forums, and I am sorry in advance. I am trying to learn all this stuff, but it will take some time :)

Please help!!!!

I purchased a ONKYO TX-SR606 receiver with Klipsch center, fronts, subs and surrounds yesterday. I was watching starwars today and I noticed that one of the surrounds was not working (specifically the right one). I checked it out and all the wiring is perfectly fine. So I put it under test, nothing - dead. Moved that wire to another surround (left) and it worked fine. Took the left and moved it over to the right - dead. Reset settings (cause this was a open box deal) - dead.

Any advice? Thank you in advance for anyone's help!!

J, welcome to the forum!

From your description, I'm getting that one of your surrounds isn't working. Before we get into taking the speaker apart to check the wiring...can you take it back? Do you want to take it back? My advice would be to swap it out at the dealer if you can. If not, we can help you troubleshoot it. Well, by "we" I mean the people here who are more experienced with speakers than I am. :)

Adam,

Thank you for the welcome :)

Also, thank you for getting back to me. The speaker is fine (checked it with another output - left channel instead of right). It seems like its the channel connector in the back, but I cannot be sure. Thats why I am asking :(

Should I just return the receiver (open box deal from circuit city) and get a exchange, or do you think there is more troubleshooting to be done?

Ahhh, I misunderstood your description. Your statement that, "Moved that wire to another surround (left) and it worked fine" made me think that the receiver was okay. My apologies.

Are you running two surround speakers (like in a 5.1 set up) or four surround speakers (like in a 7.1 set up)? If you are using only two surrounds, are you sure that you have them hooked up to the correct speaker terminals on the Onkyo? Not trying to be patronizing - just asking, as it's something that might be connected wrong.

Also, did you run the auto set-up on the Onkyo? If so, did you hear any sound coming from that surround speaker? If not, I recommend that you do that. I think that it should give you a warning or notice if that speaker isn't detected.

Take it back! If you have a problem and CAN take it back I urge you to do so asap. Don't mess around trying to troubleshoot the receiver just take it back and get another one...

I ran the auto setup and right did not get detected. Also, everything is connected properly in back of the device.

Center, Front and Surr are all filled.

I am just worried since it was a open box deal they won't just do that.

In that case, I'm going to go with what Jamie said - take it back. I figured that you probably got a decent discount with the open box special, so it would be best if there was a simple solution for this one. However, if everything is hooked up properly and the auto set-up routine doesn't detect the speaker (and you know the speaker is working fine), then take that bad boy back. It is NOT worth screwing around with Onkyo's service centers. Just get a new one from Circuit City or somewhere else.

Thank you all - I was hoping it would not come to that, but oh well :(

Maybe I will get a new one out of the deal, who knows.

Update:

Went to CC to exchange the unit. Supervisor stated that I would have to pay a higher price cause they sell it for 499. Told the sup it was on sale on the site and he just gave it to me for equal value :)

Hooked it up last night and ran the auto tests - had no issues :)

Just to be sure everything is ok, I got the extended warranty plan for 5 years :)

At least now you know why the 1st one was an open box return.

Sigh...these retailers would get away with murder if we let them.

Excellent! Thanks for the update. That's great news. I'm glad that you got that all worked out.
