Quick question...

Hi everybody, first time poster!!

I'm looking into purchasing a Sony home theater system (HTDDW790) to add some sound to my small room. Now i have no audio set up knowledge what so ever but I'm thinking of taking out 2 of the satellite speakers and connecting 2 old car subs into there place. The receiver handles 133W per channel and my car subs are JL audio 12W0 that run at 125 RMS each. As far as i know, they should work together but I may be wrong. My other concern is that the receiver runs at 6 ohms and the speakers are 4 ohm each i believe. If I try this, would I blow my subs or even my receiver?

Using subwoofers for satellites is insane. They cover different frequencies. Expect at best a deep, muffled sound with no mids or highs.

Dunno for sure about that four ohm thing, but have long sticks and marshmallows handy just in case.

I understand the system is inexpensive ( $150) but the front and satellite speakers are tiny,tiny. There is no way you could get and good mid range sounds. If you are sold on this system the subs from you car might work; at list they would give you better low end and some midrange response. The difference between 4 ohm and 6 ohm shouldn't be an issue if you don't run maximum volume.

There is a sub woofer, that could handle the bass, but it looks too be a pretty ligthwieght speaker (10 lbs) for a sub.

Is approximately $150 your total budget? If so I am not sure you are going to get the sound you want. If you can raise you budget a little there are a lot better options. Good front speakers is the key to a good starting system

It is highly, HIGHLY doubtful that the receiver in a low cost HTiB is going to be anywhere near capable of directly driving any decent sub like the JLs (one, let alone two). Note that you have to read the fine print on the output of the HTiB, as they can be misleading and rated at PEAK power, not RMS, with the RMS being much, much lower. If it has a sub out, you could feed that to a separate amp to drive the JLs, but trying to run them off a HTiB receiver is asking for trouble.

I might suggest that you don't overlook the possibility of just using a simpler stereo/2 channel setup, rather than surround sound, especially if your room is small.

Those low end home theater systems have pretty cheap speakers. I'd bet if you simplify the system you might be happier in the long run. Think about getting two nice speakers instead of 6 cheap ones. You can always add more speakers later.

That's is what I was alluding too an inexpensive 2 channel system that Pweller is recommending.
