Ipod Touch - PC playlist recovery ?

Help ! - My son has an Ipod touch with about 1,100 songs recorded. Something happened to the playlist on his hosting PC ( OS = Vista home premium) and it only shows 51 songs. He told me "sync" will load the PC play list onto the Ipod and remove all but the 51 of his 1,100 songs. Obviously , he doesn't want to do this. He also doesn't want to reload all of the CDs to the PC again! The songs were loaded to the Ipod by first copying the CD to the PC.

Is there recommended software to copy the songs from the Ipod to the PC and rebuilt the playlist with the artisits and albums intact?

He has the 8 gB Ipod touch

Did it remove the song library or just the playlists? Navigate and look to see if the music is still there. If it is then I think you can just rebuild the library.

Start iTunes and go to Edit - Preferences. Click on the Advanced tab. In the General withing the advanced tab it will show the location of the music folder. If it is not correct then navigate to the correct folder and click OK and it should rebuild the Library.

I want to make sure that you are talking about the main library of songs and not the "playlists" of songs within the library that he has created.

Adk highlander, thanks very much for your reply. I an a real neophyte at the Ipod and know very little about it. I have a lot (well some will argue ) of experience with stereo and HT systems but very little with the Ipod.

I am not at the particular PC or Ipod right now, but I am pretty sure the songs are gone also. Occasionally, he burns CDs from the PC ( he says he can no longer do that) and apparently both the playlist and songs are gone except for 51. Bare with me, if this is not the right information let me know what you need and I can ask him tonight.

I have to leave now for a meeting (damn work getting in the way again). When you get in front of it go where I listed to see where iTunes thinks the songs are and see what directory it is and then check within Windows to see if they are actually gone.

You could also try to do a rollback on Windows Vista to a date previous to when the songs where deleted (this may have other consequences depending on any other additions you have made to the computer). I have had good luck doing this with bad driver updates or registry errors but it does not always seem to recover files.

I will check back in when I get back later tonight.

Thanks again I will check tonight, but it might be bad news! No sure when last rollback would go to; don't think regular backups are taken but I am pretty sure before the iPod was installed a couple of weeks ago. Also, I am almost positive the files are actually gone!

will update tonight! Do anyone know any good software to copy iPod music to PC ? I think this will be the next recovery step.

Actually this is the only product I had tried and i got an error message:
Exception Processing Message 0xc0000013 Parameters 0x75B8023C 0x83DC9ACC 0x75B8023C 0x75B8023C11.2.2 I sent an email to their support last night, but haven't received a response.

An apparently now there is a charge of $19.99 after the 30 day free trial on ephpod.

I talked to my son over the phone and took adk_Highlander's advice. It turns out the path in the iTunes was not correctly pointing to the music folders. He changed that and now apparently has all of his songs!
