Well, I've got a laptop based RTA system... but that's the extent of my 'tools' go for measuring.

Passive may just be the way I go. I don't know if I can justify a pre-amp/processor in addition to an amp when so many receivers can do auto-eq anyway. We'll see.

Your logic doesn't follow, auto-eq is nothing like what would be done with an active processor like a Behringer DEQ. But your conclusion is probably correct, go passive. Because unless you have the same skillset required to engineer a passive system, you can't correctly engineer an active system.

Something like a Behringer DCX2496 can do a pair of 3-ways or three 2-ways with one unit. You can also daisy chain 3 units together but with two you can do your entire front stage and two subs if you go with 2-ways.

Most active processing I know of includes a p-eq or g-eq; not just x-over. That's where my logic was. I was saying that, for me, the big benefit for getting an active setup would be the EQ abilities. Should've said that explicitly, so sorry.
