That sucks!

Hope you are ok...

When a deer jumps in front of your car first he says it then he does it...and it's on the side of your vehicle!;)

Hope it's not too much damage,

I'm assuming that you struck and killed a deer. Doesn't seem like much damage to your vehicle, though. I hope that you and anyone with you is okay.

Why would you say that he deserved it? Were you able to at least keep the meat?

Thanks, SBF1. I fear frame and axle damage. There's definitely mechanical damage. I hope they find everything. The right tire was smoking by the time I stopped. The bumper had bent into it and was doing a nice job of gouging it.

This was my paid-off mint baby, 9 years old, but going on infancy (72,000 miles)! :(:(:(

But yes, the good news is that the missus and I came away almost unscathed. We're both a little sore today. That was quite an impact. But the deer got the worst of it....that is unless it enjoyed flying 50-75 feet in the air before being dumped back into the forest from which it came. (I guess they fly further when they have had a recent shat! ;))

Speed at impact....~63 mph.

Glad that you're both okay! Wow, 63 mph. I would have expected a lot more crumple on your front end. I'm guessing that the picture doesn't do it justice, though.

He was toast and it's illegal to keep the meat...tho' venison jerky is delicious, I hear. ;) It would have been cheaper for us to go out and buy a deer sized hunk of venison than to pay what we have to in comprehensive deductible insurance and car rental fees.

He didn't really deserve it other than what he did to our Toyota and our bodies from the impact. I'm sure he was a decent, law-abiding deer until he decided to violate state Highway J-walking laws. Ergo, he deserved it.

Thanks, Adam.

These dudes hit pretty hard...it's kind of unbelievable, actually. No, the pic was one I just grabbed on the way out from the repair shop. It won't be totalled but it will be a major repair if the frame and axle are involved as it appears to be.

That's a shame. It's not like you went out to illegally hunt with your vehicle, after all. Well, hopefully at least a coyote family will have a good meal or two.

Oh, I hear ya! My parents hit a deer on a highway in Illinois. They were probably going 50-60 mph, and it messed up their car pretty bad. That's why I was suprised that your front end wasn't just smashed. Luckily, my parents were fine. Unfortunately, can't say the same for the deer.

If you regularly drive in areas prone to dear collisions like I do, I would recommend one of these for your suv or truck, unfortunately they're just ugly on a car though.

I forgot to mention.....in order to drive on, I had to pry out the bumper and all the support stuff which was crumpled onto and to the inside of the tire. There was no right front corner of the 4Runner when it first happened. I sorta put it back together, lol.

Thanks for the idea, sparky. I've often thought about adding one of these, but I thought they were better grill guards for brush and small things. I see no way one of these could withstand a large deer impact at highway speed. Maybe...I dunno. Have you seen results? I guess it would minimize body damage.

The area where we got nailed is well-known for it's deer related accidents...highway speed, dense forest, extremely narrow road shoulders. I didn't even see the poor thing until at collision time. I liked the idea of those anti-deer whistles and used them since we live in a heavily populated deer area. Even those are only said to be 90% effective. But one of mine had gone missing in the last few months, and you need two whistles for it to work properly.

glad to hear you and the missus came out of it unscathed. Just last month my wifes niece had a similar incident and she was more distraught about the young deer, than her car(Toyota Corolla) heh... Needless to say we've all seen footage or read stories about these types of encounters with nature and for some the deer is not the only tragedy.
Take care and all the best, Bill:)

I just used those grille guards as an example, in North Dakota this is a common occurance, besides the cattle that jump fences and get hit by vehicles. The only places that seem to sell the really heavy duty ones like I put on my pickup are the farm and ranch suppliers, and are often refered to as cattle guards. Believe me they work, mines bounced about a dozen deer since I got the truck and there's not even a bend in it. If you can find a good brush guard it will atleast minimize the body damage to the vehicle.
