advice???

hello, i am new around here and i have questions about my current audio video setup. here is what i am running

yamaha ht5740 reciever
bose 201 front channels
jbl surrounds and center (3" driver and silk dome)
10" 100W jbl sub
kenwood turntable from the 80s
JVC stereo reciever with phono preamp
toshiba upconvert dvd
toshiba 32" HD tube
custom built media computer

my question is more about the way my room is set up. it seems like i should be getting better sound than what i hear.

the room is set up diagonally which didnt seem like the best but it gives me more room.
dimensions: 20'x16'
speakers are hooked up with monster copper cable.
the front channels are 10 feet apart and one foot off the ground. think they should be higher up?
my center channel speaker is 4.5 feet off the ground and my surrounds are the same.
should i add the rear surround? i havent been using it.
and where is the best placement for my sub.

ill post pictures when i have 5 posts.

Ditch the speakers and start again. You can't expect much from that speaker set up.

Start with the basics. Not to be too demeaning, but you can't polish a turd.

Replace them with better speakers, which is almost anything, and you'll be surprised at how much improvment you realize.

Hi davestradamus,

First thing that i would do (with out spending money or totally rearranging the room) is get your tweeters up to ear level and adjust your levels in your receiver.

Go to the audioholics main page an look for the set up articles. Speaker placement can make a huge difference.

Let us know how you make out.

If you are trying to improve on sound without spending $$$, follow Mr strong...
suggestion and also raise the rears more.

thanks for the input. i would like to get tower style front channel speakers and use the bose for the rear. seems like there are a lot of haters here. they were a part of my christmas bonus from my boss last year. so i couldnt beat the price. but the first thing i am going to do is get a new center channel. here is a picture of what the room looks like:

i am on a real budget. and keep in mind, this is a one bedroom apartment. i think my reciever is set up the right way now. i used the test and configured it for a small room.

it sounds better but i still am not satisfied.... (go figure). i really like the sound of this system playing vinyl. this particular record i have was recorded in "medium fidelity". which is scientific talk for "broke a$$ Sh!t". but it sounds so warm and fuzzy running through two recievers and turned up loud.

mmm.. i am enjoying a cold one right now. hazed and infused from boulder co. beer and homebrewing are my first hobby. i am still new to this audio thing.

oooh, and i didnt mean to post that twice, i am not a forum noob. will a mod please delete it. sorry....
