HDMI Lag - Partial Solution on the Horizon

Silicon Image, Inc. announced recently that they were working on a solution that would reduce the time it takes to switch from one HDMI source to another on your high definition display. This new technology, dubbed InstaPort, is promised to reduce the switching time to less than second. But this "solution" is fraught with problems not the least of which is that you'll probably have to go without the new high def audio formats if you want to use it. But for those that spent $5000 on a flat panel and use the internal speakers, this might be the solution for you.

My name is Lew and I work for Silicon Image. I'd like to address a few errors/misconceptions about how InstaPort technology™ works and what InstaPort technology solutions Silicon Image is providing to our OEM customers.

InstaPort technology works completely within the existing HDMI standard(s). It requires no changes in your source devices or content to reduce switching times.

Silicon Image is providing InstaPort technology solutions for a variety of different sink devices including both DTVs and AVRs.

Our AVR solution is called the SiI9261. The SiI9261 includes full repeater support, 4 port HDMI 1.3 switching, and provides support for InstaPort technology as well as an emerging standard for mobile devices called Mobile High Definition Link™ technology. The SiI9261 also includes support for 36-bit (12-bit x 3) component video/RGB for superb analog video quality up to 1080p/UXGA resolutions.

Thanks Mtrycrafts for the kind welcome. I've been a lurker on the forum for awhile so it's nice to be able to contribute for a change.

It still sounds like "improving" HDMI by taking away the only compelling reason to use it. HDMI is the only way consumer gear can pass HD audio. It's not practical to use analogue connections if you have more than one source. Plus, the quality of analogue is often suspect.
