Help Picking a Compact Sub

I am in the process of purchasing a HT for a 12x12 family room. I am looking for a sub that is compact but will still deliver good performance and gets low enough for movies.

After some research, here is my list of proposed subs:
Velodyne Minivee
Sunfire Super Junior
Def Tech Supercube II or III
Paradigm Ultracube 10
Paradigm PDR 10

These are available to test out at local stores and all seem to fit the bill on paper.

I have NHT L5 speakers for the L/C/R

No receiver yet, but probably the Onkyo TX-SR606 or the new Denon AVR-1909

Any experience with these or opinions as to which is the best?

Welcome to the forum!

I have no opinion on those subs, but I wanted to welcome you and to ask if it's possible for you to bring any/all of those home and audition them in your own room?

Take a look at a SVS cylinder subwoofer. Also the SVS SB12-Plus. Do some research around the audio forum world, and research SVS's performance over the subs you've listed. I think you'll find some favorable results.

An SVS recommendation from Mazer? Where did that come from? :D

I think that the OP is looking for a compact sub. I was going to recommend a look into the SVS SB12-Plus, but the ability to check them out locally seemed important.

BTW, NewHTbuyer, I own an SVS cylinder and absolutely love it. It's not compact, though.

How can you say the footprint is not "Compact"?
Oh, the footprint is definitely compact. That's one of the reasons that I choose the cylinder. However, the height is not. The thing is darn near four feet tall. Four feet of stout beauty, that is.

In relation to the other subs he has chosen it's footprint is 1"-3" inches larger. Not that much.

Mazer, see my post above yours. I am so good, I apparently can answer you before you even ask. ;) :D

if your going to onlyy stick with the B&M brands you like mentioned, change the velo mini-vee to a dd-10 or spl10;) If you open to ID, the outlaw lfm has a small footprint, the new HSU uls15 would also be another......

I agree band. The LFM-1Compact would be and excellent choice. The Hsu STF2 would be as well. If the op has the budget for the uls 15 would be awesome. I believe that Outlaw has done away with the LFM2. They would also had been very good. Hopefully, the OP will stay away from the Paradigm PDR 10.

Cheers,

Phil

I agree, check out the SVS SB12-Plus, I have one in the living room HT. It is compact, looks good, and sounds great. Just don't expect tons of <20 Hz output from a compact sub. If you want more output, get 2.

It would seem from the subs you have listed that you are looking for a sub with a small footprint and stature.

I'm not sure what your timeframe is to purchase a subwoofer, but the Emotiva subwoofer packages that will be coming out soon will be hard to beat.

Also, though not even close to the definition of compact, the AV123 MFW-15 is an awesome subwoofer for the money:

Compact???

18.875"(h) x 18"(w) x19.25"(d) 20.25" (d)with grille

Price King???

$1299-$1499
it's a ratio, compact : price

plus the fact that you already suggested a 17x17 footprint sub :)

there are no other sealed subs in that price range

the Velo SPL-R, DD, Paradigm Servo, JL Fathom, etc. are all spectacularly more expensive

if i didn't have a DD, i could get four of the ULS-15's with massively better output

was talking about the cylinder, i know i measured the cylinder, while the top grill and base plate is really 16" ... i specifically remember the cloth part in the middle was wider uncompressed. maybe 16.5" iirc ... ill take out the tape measure again tonight.

Sunfire HRS-12 should also be a contender for what the OP is looking for.

went home and measured my cylinder ... more like 16 5/8" - which is why i made a mental note of 17" :)
