I've had explained to me that a bray player is more computer than single purpose player. Maybe that's the issue with OPPO since it's more of a computer as opposed to just a multipurpose disc player. I don't know.

I just think it's b-ray is going to be a lot like DVD was the first couple of years. One time top of the line reference players performed worse than entry level players after just few years. I don't imagine there going to be a whole of changes to the specification or the feature set, most of which I could care less about anyway. I think the big changes are going to be in performance, i.e., boot speed, load speed, as well as a/v performance. So with that premise sorda in my mind, I'm not in a hurry to invest a lot of money at this point when I'm pretty darn happy with my upconverted DVD's. I know it's not the same at all, but it's good enough performance where I don't feel like I'm missing out all that much. It's not the difference like it was between VHS and DVD.

All great points. Great perspective Chris. Do you think that maybe Sony is requiring late BR player releases since winning the format war? After all, Sony did invent BR right? I can see why they may require a delay with respect to other branded BR players. But, not really sure. This is at least a possibility.

I remember spending gobs of money on a top of the line Toshiba DVD player, than spending gobs of money on the flagship Pioneer DV09 a year later which was night and day better and the standard used to pretty much judge all others... at least in the magazine world. Progressive scan and component video were the big things. 2-3 years after that, just about any "high end" $250 - $300 player had performance that was either on par or better.

I imagine the same thing will happen with blu-ray. It already is to a large degree. I mean imagine payng $1000+ for the top of the line Sony player just a year or so ago only to have the $400 350 pretty much outperform it and have a better feature set.

2 years from the same thing will happen. Maybe there will be something new in the tech front to further improve on existing bray performance. Who knows?

Very much agreed here once again Chris. I still can't believe that I payed over $400 for my Toshiba A-1. Heck, my A-3 only cost $100. Maybe it is a good thing to just wait a bit longer and see what happens.

I hate that I'm missing out on bray right now, but it's just hard to stomach the expense on something I know Ill want to replace.

Maybe we should wait and see what happens around Thanksgiving and Christmas time. With the economy and especially the retail sector contracting the way it has, there might be some deep discounting on electronics this year.
