I just moved in to a new home and need some help. The house has 6 built in speakers 4 down stairs in the ceiling and two upstairs in the ceiling in the gameroom but all 6 of the wires come out downstairs in a cabinet and I am not sure what to do. I was considering buying a 7.1 system and plugging them all up when I listen to music in the house but I don't want to have to unplug them when I am watching a show downstairs and the wife is upstairs in the gameroom doing something. Should I just get a 5.1 receivier and another dual channel system. I am not sure what I am doing here, any help would be apperciated, also the house was built 10 years ago, so I am sure the speakers are ten years old also.

I was looking at getting a yamaha RX-V463, I was planing on connecting my cable box and mabye a blu-ray player to the receiver.

First of all find out of the speakers are any good. More likely than not they are "Musac" grade. I doubt they will be any good except for background music.

Ceiling speakers should be a last resort.

I would get a 5.1 or 7.1 speaker system for you home theater, and you could use the room for background, connected to zone 2 and only use it when required.
