But to compare them to the B&W 802's (one the best speakers I've ever owned,) for example, would be a losing proposition.
Athough the 802s are used by some studios, they are not marketed as "studio monitors" and therefore fall outside the scope of this discussion.
Also, if I were going to put any 800 series speakers in my room, it would have to be the 805s as the rest are too big and too bass-heavy (and when I auditioned the 805s, I found them not worth the money, though I would certainly not turn down a pair for free.) Finally, I owned $1500 B&W speakers (705s) that were definitely not as good as the $200 Alesis, which is why I sold them.

How a speaker is marketed a certian way, is as irrelavent as your blanket statements. By bass heavy do you mean the go to low for your liking or the room wasnt treated or the speakers were not properly setup or what? I didnt realise that you sold your B&Ws because the Alesis were better? Oh because you didnt;)

By bass-heavy, I mean that they (and all large floorstanders) put out too much bass for my relatively small listening room (20' sq. total, actual listening are 12'X20'), with the result that the bass overwhelms the higher frequencies. This is obvious to anyone who has ever tried large speakers in a room that they were not designed for.

Since you lack the linguistic ability to figure it out yourself, I sold the B&Ws because the sound was not up to my standards. The Alesis are up to my standards, and thus better. I didn't use that rather wordy explanation because I assumed people would be smart enough to figure it out.
(I apologize for overestimating your intelligence like that. It won't happen again.)

Geez, I have towers in a room smaller than that and the bass is spot on along with the midrange/highs. Yet another generalization . When will you ever learn??

Perhaps we should all just look the other way when Joe posts...that way, what we don't see won't upset us :)

Why should a person with the best stereo ever made have to learn anything?

I have tried seven pairs of floorstanders in my room so far, and all of them have that same bass issue. It has never been a problem with bookshelves. I have managed to get the bass per se to sound right with a sub (by setting the sub volume to about 1 or 2 out of 10), but never managed to fully integrate a sub with bookshelves. Fortunately the bass from the Alesis is sufficient without a sub.

Excellent point. Also entirely correct. There are things of a purely technical nature for me to learn, but I am already an expert when it comes to judging sound quality.
