Recommendation on a subwoofer? Klipsch, JBL, SVS, Infinity?

I am looking for a decent sub, probably 10" for my home theatre system. I have Boston towers and a Boston center channel up front. I've read good things about the Klipsch Synergy Series, JBL Northridge series and Infinity subs. I've also heard good things about HSU and Velodyne. People on this forum seem to like SVS. Any recs? My budget is around 350 to 400 US. I would like something decently powerful. HT sound is a little more important as I feel my front bostons do a good job with music. Thanks for any help.

p.s. does down vs. front firing really matter? if so, when?

Don't go with a JBL sub thats for sure, and Klipsch is a maybe, go with an svs PB10 NSD its a 10 insch sub with very efficient amplifier and it for 429, this sub was recommended by a veteran audiophile in another forum so I'm sure its a good sub

HSU and SVS would be good choices. As for JBL subs, only go for the L8400P, which is the Studio L series sub. It is JBL's best sub, short of their THX HTPS400.

Either of these SVS or HSU

Either of these are good choices:

SVS PB10-NSD $429

Hsu VTF-1 $399
http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/vtf-1.html

Because the sub has low frequency signals, it is not as directional as other speakers and downfiring versus front firing is a matter of personal preference.

I think you get more bang for the buck with the ID companies like SVS, HSU, eD, AV123, and Epik. IMO the eD A2-300 for $315 shipped gives you the most bang for the buck, and I don't think you can do better without spending at least >$400.
