Samsung HL61A750 meets my Denon AVR3805

Well I bit the bullet and bought the Samsung 61" series 7 LED DLP!!!

I got it home and began all the hook ups. I was excited because I had 4 shiny new optical cables and 3 shiny new HDMI cables (all purchased from Monoprice) waiting to hook up to my new TV and my Denon. Obviously this would be my first true HDMI TV (previous TV had 1 DVi input) and I was stoked about eliminating so much cable clutter (component cables are so clunky) by running my HD-DVD, HD-DVR, and my XBOX 360 all directly into the Samsung via HDMI, with audio via optical cables directly into the Denon.

The only significant factor, besides calibrating the TV picture, would be running the Denon's system set-up to define each of the Optical inputs to each piece of my hardware, since I hadn't ever used just Optical input 1 before!!!

Thus the trouble began...I hooked up all 3 HDMI from each video source directly to the TV along with a component cable from the Denon's component "Monitor" output directly into the Samsung's "Comp 1" input. I then powered everything on, success the TV powered up no problem, recognized the HDMI input for my Time Warner cable and performed an auto channel set-up. I then had video from the HD-DVR and every other HDMI input showed a picture!

Now I needed to set-up the audio so I had to set the input devices on the Denon to recognize each Optical input to each video/audio source, but upon switching the Samsung's source to Comp 1, I got a message that said "no signal"!!! I tried everything, each and every "Monitor" output option, S-Video, Component, and standard VGA, and all of them came back "no signal" from the TV.

I then hooked every video source directly into the Denon (using it as a switch) thus disconnecting the HDMI hook-ups I had done with my previous TV, and still no matter which "Monitor" output devide I used to connect the Denon to the Samsung, I got the same "no signal" message. So now it seems that either the monitor function of the Denon is not working (it is processing the audio signals just fine) or the Samsung just isn't recognizing the Denon at all.

Anyone have experience with these brands before, my Denon has been reliable with my previous TV so I am assuming the Samsung is to blame. Anyone have any advice???

So far so good, the picture needs a bit more calibration since I have been focused on solving my Denon problem, but I love the TV so far. I will know better of course once I get everything up and running properly!!!

JUST A CLARIFYING STATMENT "WHEN YOU HOOK UP VIA THE 3 HDMI'S DIRECTLY TO THE TV YOU GET PICTURE FOR EACH SOURCE CORRECT?"
you then hooked up an optical from each source into the receivers 3 optical input?
SO YOUR PROBLEM IS THAT YOU ARE GETTING NO AUDIO?
I AM CONFUSED AS TO WHY YOU RAN 3 HDMIS TO THE TV THEN AN ADDITIONAL COMPONENT CABLE FROM MONITOR OUT? If you run the hdmi's right directly into the tv then dont need a component cable from monitor out on the receiver going into "comp 1" because it will say no signal when you switch to comp 1. you need to get rid of that component cable because your hdmi's are running right directly to the TV. if you wanted to watch tv and your warner cable hdmi is running into video 1 input then you need to put the tv on video 1. if you want to play xbox and the hdmi is connected to video 2 input on the tv you need to put the tv on video 2. I think because your receiver doesnt have HDMI inputs it makes things complicated!!! then again HDMI is complicated!!!

The only real reason why I need to run the component cable from the receiver to the Samsung is so that I can run system set-up and display the Denon menus on the Samsung. The only reason I even need to do this is because 2 of the 4 optical cables need to be assigned as digital audio outputs, since in the past I was using a combination of digital coax and some optical, but not all optical. Currently I can get 2 of the 4 video sources to output sound from my Denon, but the other 2 optical inputs need to be set-up!!!

Without the set-up menu being displayed on the Samsung, I don't know how I can set-up the optical cables. Going to try to move it into another room and use another TV as a monitor later, just was trying to avoid this option!!!

Didn't see it mentioned -- have tried direct analog video connections from sources to TV to disqualify the TV's connections? It's strange you're not getting a signal from the 3805.

It could be output format issue. I have a Samsung TV and Denon receiver but not the models you have so I'm just guessing at things to look at. You may have to have the Denon's video conversion setting to on in order to use the component output, but the Denon is likely sending the menu out in 480i. The Samsung may not be able to receive 480i through it's HD (component) input. I know that it won't receive 480i over HDMI, but I don't know how it processes over component. If you have the video conversion set to on, the Denon is likely not sending a signal out of the S-video or composite outputs.

Try to set the Denon's video conversion to off (if you even have that setting) and running just a standard yellow video (composite) to the TV.

Shot in the dark in case nothing else has worked: try disconnecting all the HDMI video inputs except for the Denon monitor out. A little far-fetched but worth a try.

Try it but no such luck, still no set-up menus being displayed and still says "no signal"!!! Very frustrated at this point!!!

In the OPTIONS menu, be sure the ON SCREEN DISPLAY setting is set to ON. You may also have to use MODE 2 with the new display.

Got everything working finally, though work interrupted so really should have handled it 3 days ago. I will say this, I love this Samsung DLP TV, absolutely beautiful picture!!! Found a ton of posted settings over at AVForums!!!

went over CC to look at some of these sets. i looked at 2 of the A650 models and both had the slight bowing effect. i looked at the 61 and 67inch 750s series and neither had the bowing. i asked the sales guy if i took one home and noticed this if they would take it back and they said they would.

while i was there i looked at some of the panasonic plasma's, what a beutiful display those panason are especially at $1500 for 50inch sets, however i am looking for something in the 60inch range and the plasmas get up to $4k plus at that size so i may be going with DLP.

So what was the issue?
Well it appears unfortunately that my Denon AVR-3805 is no longer displaying properly when hooked up through "monitor" out connections. I hooked it up directly to 3 different TVs using all three "monitor" out options and couldn't get it to work right. I am waiting to here back from Denon about a certified repair facility near me or what my options are to get it looked at!!!

If this proves to be too difficult or too expensive then I will be looking at a new Denon receiver, possibly the AVR-2808CI!!!
