My computer just crashed so I lost all my programming for my Pronto 9600 remote.

Does anyone know if there is a way to export the settings off the remote back onto a fresh install of the ProntoEdit software?

Thanks.

I'm not sure if you can... but go over to the Pronto 9600 section over at Remotecentral..... http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/mboard/prontopro/list.cgi

That was something I thought about, as I remembered reading somewhere that you can't export it, so I backed it up to like 3-4 places....

Sorry to hear of your issue, did you try to do a recovery on that Hard drive?
If you haven't written any info to it yet, it may be recoverable.

I haven't tried to do a recovery on it, I'm waiting for the smoke and burnt smell to go away :)

Well I hope that it was something other then the HD that is smelling up the innards of your computer...

Remember, do not write anything to that HD, or whatever chance you had to retrieve your date will be forever lost... :(

Unfortunately, it was the HD. I used to build computers for a living, so as soon as I smelt the burning I opened the case to figure it out. The power cable was bad and shorted out, which then torched the HD board. So, unless I plan on overhauling the board on the HD, which is not in the plans, that HD is dead.

I don't need the remote write now anyway, selling off my HT and then rebuilding it, so eventually I'll just reprogram it from scratch

Well, I always reprogram from scratch when I get a new remote or a new component. The computer programmable remotes have the advantage of being able to export your code to a file and save it for re-import into another remote but I find that to be a bother. And no I am not anti-programming because if I were, I'd be unemployed. It's just that programming a remote isn't so time consuming and complicated that I feel the need to archive my settings for import into a new remote at a later time. Starting over is just fine by me...of course you mileage may vary and all of that.

The only problem is with the Pronto's you can make your own art work for the buttons, so If I wanted to use a picture of my cat to turn everything off, I could import the picture edit it, scale it, color it, then apply the links to all the different pieces of equipment that must be turned off. Because its a much more of a Graphical interface, and people use it to customize the way it looks, reprogramming can become a chore with this remote, and if you lose all the graphics you put into it, it can be more difficult then just a normal remote...

Here is a pic of how 1 single factory page is... You can make pages and pages of the channels you use, and you have to swap out pics, drag and drop what you want for every different aspect of customization. as you can see on the right, there are 5 more page of just TV channels alone, as well as on the top, the 1, 2, 3 represent more pages, like the numbers if you want to direct dial a channel, and DVR functions, play, pause, stop FF, you get the picture...

Here is a link to a page with screenshots of what people have completely customized their particular remote to look like and function. Its really amazing what you can do with this remote...

Here are some examples... Pretty slick, one can even do animation...

With this one, when you hit the FF or RR arrows the ball spins to reveal more channels... that guy is a serious programmer, with awesome photoshop skills.

Or this one, when you push any button, it morphs like liquid, you can see the wave...

Anyone can download the Pronto Pro software, and the files on that page, and test them out... its feaky what you can do with the 9600.

So in the end, one can have hundreds of hours in to one of these if they chose to work that hard, and backing up a file can be critical. :) YMMV how involed you want to go with stuff like that...
