HDMI over Cat5

This looks promising. Being able to do HDMI over Cat5 for long distances. Now if the price would come down to like $100-$200 instead of $500+...

It'll work for now, but not if they every take advantage of HDMI's full bandwidth. HDMI has a max bandwidth of almost 4gbps, about 4x the bandwidth of CAT6. Still, it's a cool idea.

That looks awesome. Being able to go from HDMI to Cat5e would be great for the simple fact of price. I dont understand why manufactures dont even put cat5e jacks on thier components. You could be able to do whole house integration alot easier with TCP/IP and the data rates should be enough to handle the needs of high end audio and video.

Isnt 4gbps for audio and video? So if you seperate them out, it'd be 1gbps for each available. Is the signal compressed before sending over ethernet?
That still isn't enough. But, it's providing the ground work for when 10gbps ethernet becomes more mainstream in homes.

I wonder if this would work going through a ethernet switching or routing device. Perhaps allowing 1 source output to multiple devices.

If you use a quality switch with high enough data rates that should no be a problem.

It is possible and very eaisly done if there is proper coding and decoding on the component side.

That is a cool idea. What exactly does the little box do? Is it not feasible to simply terminate Cat5 with HDMI connectors? I have about 1000 feet of Cat5 sitting around. How many wires are in an HDMI cable?

Maybe I missed something, but I don't see anything about TCP/IP or ethernet on this page.

They're just using the conductors in cheaply available Cat5 to transmit the signal. A switch won't work.

I have this dilemma. I have Dish Network VIP622 with component hooked up to my main 61" DLP tv. Then I have a 20" Vizio TV in my bedroom. I have Coax running to this 20" TV but it just doesn't look that great of quality. I have the HDMI port on my VIP 622 unused and was trying to figure out a way to get that signal to my Vizio TV. I have a Cat5 cable running from my VIP622 to my Vizio TV as well. Is there any HDMI box that will transmit audio and Video over Cat5 without having 2 cables? I mean it wouldn't be that hard to run another Cat5 to this location since I do have a subfloor but I would like to stay away from the spiders if necessary ....

I don't believe there is anything that will transmit HDMI over only one Cat5 cable.

The other thing to keep in mind is that the VIP622, like the newer 722, supports one HDTV and one SDTV. If you use the HDMI output to feed the bedroom TV then you will lose the dual mode functionality and you would need to watch the same thing on both sets.

I know that both HDTV sides have to watch the same thing but very rarely do both of these TV's every get watched at the same time and since I do have the Coax there as well I can always just switch to the Coax in this case.

What is the cheapest HDMI over 2 cat5's available?

I'm not sure what the cheapest one is but I haven't seen any under $400.

How long is the run? Since you would need to run another cable anyway, it may be much cheaper to simply run an HDMI cable. Monoprice has HDMI cables up to 100ft topping out at around $100.

The run is like 30ft or so under the house. So yeah that would be the way to go. I should go to Fry's tomorrow and see how much one is.

You won't likely find an HDMI cable that long at any big box store and if you do it would probably be very expensive. I have had a Monoprice 35ft HDMI for over a year now and it has performed flawlessly and stood up to abuse. I guarantee you won't find a 35" HDMI for anywhere near $40 at a big box store. $40 *might* get you a 3ft cable.

No, the audio is actually interleaved into the video signal. 4 Gbps also refers to each color channel, not the entire RGB chain + data.

This particular solution is good for up to 1080p at 8-bit. Currently, it takes a bit more to get to the higher bitrates (which aren't really being used yet)

The only cable I've seen that would fit your application at the big box stores is a 50 ft. Monster for $500! I'd suggest saving the gas and going with Monoprice or Blue Jean cables.

Hi mdntblu, before you run all the wire, double check on something.
I'm 90% sure you can only use the component outputs, OR, HDMI not both at the same time.
Supports two TVs – one HDTV and one SDTV.
I have the same 622 DVR.
