I haven't heard them yet. I'll update this post when I drop by this evening.

Fry's has a pair of 3-way dual 6/12" floorstanding loudspeakers on sale for $99.99 each. Normally they would be $600/pair?

I'll try and give them a listen and report back.

So did you listen to or buy them? I saw them at Fry's, but didn't get to listen to them. They look good without the grills. I thinking about getting them. Anybody heard these speakers?

Yes, they are outstanding for the price (even full retail). If these are in line with the Primus 160 bookshelf speakers, I assume they are, they could be excellent if modified. WmAx would be the one to speak to on such matters.:D

I am curious. Why do they need to be modified? Are they not excellent the way they are? Thanks.

Yes, this is an excellent speaker, comparable to many in the $1000-$2000 range, I kid you not. This particular model is developed by Infinity using the direct research of Floyd Toole and the performance of these speakers was verified using double blinded tests with many trained listeners against competing speakers.

However, as Seth stated, they are resonant, as are most speakers. If you were to modify them to specific point, which don't mistake, is a lot of work, they would easily compare to speakers costing 50x the price, in objective performance. The drivers and crossovers are of appropriate quality; the only shortcoming is the cabinet system used. These don't even use proper internal acoustic absorption, much less a proper cabinet. But a proper cabinet is not economically feasible on low or even medium price range speakers.

I have experimented with the Primus 160, a 2 way version of the speaker above, and the results were beyond my expectation when a highly modified cabinet and active DSP xover was used. It uses 1st rate midrange units and a very good tweeter. Also, I have measured/analyzed the midrange used in the Primus 360(the almost identical 2005 version of the 362) and it was of 1st rate performance. I also do modifications for people to existing speakers to radically improve performance, but this is not a cheap service - it's very labor intensive - and since I do it only a few hours in a week(I only do it on weekends, a few hours a day) - it takes a few weeks for me to complete a modification for someone.

If I had a local Fry's, heck, I would pick up a pair of the 362's at this price just to modify and give away to a friend or something. But the shipping of almost 1 C note is puts it over what I want to spend just to play with it. But for someone needing some speakers in the 1k range, these are an excellent choice, and at the current price, it's a steal of a deal.

Please look at the measurements from Stereophile of the Primus 360:

Chris,

What are your thoughts on the Infinity Beta 50? Are they comparable in performance to the 360/2?

I have never measured/anlayzed that speaker, nor have I seen sufficient credible 3rd party measurement data. However, you can always send me one unit to analyze if you have one and are curious.

Sale is over.:(

I think I'm going to pick up a pair next time they go on sale and experiment with them.

you can also get the whole primus line from harman (infinity's parent company) ebay auctions. just type in primus in an ebay search and you'll see all their auctions. it's mostly the bookshelves, but they have the floorstander 252s and 362s

They put them on sale again this weekend here in Austin even though they sold out the previous weekend.

It's the Infinity Primus P362B.

I had no idea that were that good. I was busy chasing RBH's on E-bay. I could've picked up a set of these Friday. I'm sure they're gone now.
Depending on what RBH you're looking for you may want to check out:
http://www.emptek.com/

I got my RBH on walls from them. They are a sister company so no worries about warranty or fly by night. Good friendly customer service.

Nice score! For 200 bucks I don't think there is a better buy in home audio.
The centers and surrounds are available for good deals on FleaBay. I'm not sure if I want an Infinity sub though. My room is a bit big for that 15x24x10 with many open walls.
