I have read through quite a few of the threads related to old Cerwin Vega speakers...... well I didnt see the info I really needed (might just be searching wrong).

I have a pair of UT12R CVs. The foam on one of the 12" has cracked so I need to either refoam or replace the speaker. I also have a decent center and an ok pair of surrounds but its all in a room thats 28x28x16 vaulted ceilings with an open loft (not part of the measurements). So I have ALOT of space that I have to fill to get sound to where it needs to be. I cant really listen to movies etc at the best volume due to the kids sleeping when we are able to watch grown up movies so ...... basically Im a dad with a family and a budget and not alot of options.

I dont have a huge budget to spend, I also dont have anywhere that I could put a subwoofer so, loosing the big base I get from these old monsters is just not possible. Im not an "audiophile", point of fact Im probably closing on legally deaf so the "crispness" of sounds isnt as important to me as just being able to hear them at all.

Question one are the speakers salvageable with just a foam replacement (they are immaculate except for the foam)?

Is it worth refoaming, or should I replace the 12" entirely?

Side topic, what advise would you give for getting the voices to me, 13' from the TV and the Main/center, without just turning up the volume (my reciever is an old pioneer VSX-D498)?

I know Im operating way below the level that many of you are, but its gonna be another 10 years before I can watch grown up movies around the kids so gun battles will have to stay quiet till then ;)

Thanks in advance for the help

I would have the speaker re foamed. Orange county speakers are a certified repair center for CW. If you are handy, you can do the job yourself.

You say you are very hard of hearing. Do you use hearing aids? If you do then you can run an inductive loop system from the tape out, or preferably pre out of your receiver, if it has them, to deliver the sound clearly to your hearing aid.

hard of hearing in that I dont hear voices very clear with alot of background noise. I havent really had it "tested" its just left over from alot of years spent in tanks and on firing ranges.

I have really thought of investing in some wireless headphones but I want to get good sound and I need to be able to sit 12+ feet from the transmitter.

Lets just say my hearing is probably similar to anyone who spent alot of time at rock concerts in the 70s and 80s. :0)

You sound as if you have noise induced hearing cochlea and nerve damage from excessive noise levels. It certainly sounds as if your progressive high frequency hearing loss, is already into the speech discrimination band, which starts below 2.5KHz band. Make sure you use hearing protection around loud noise.

I strongly recommend an appointment with ENT and audiology.

I'm moving our town home from Grand Forks MN to Eagan MN today and tomorrow. I will be off the Net until sometime Monday at least.
