Velodyne DD-15 - NOT WORKING HELP

I must say I am quite upset. I purchased a DD-15 subwoofer back in November, and when I jsut bought my new Integra Preamp - I cant get my sub to work on it. I now know it is the Sumb fault because I took it to my freinds house and it does not work on his system either.

Any advice on what it can be? I am real worried that it might be the amp and I am not sure how much that costs. The front light still turns on. How can I trouble shoot this? Any help can be appreciated.

The first thing to check is if there is a user replaceable fuse that has blown.

How can I do that? I would have to remove the entire back metal panel correct?

I don't know anything about that particular Velodyne sub. Some subs have user replaceable fuses and that would be the first thing to check if you have a manual or can otherwise find out if it does have a fuse.

Hopefully somebody with that sub or experience with dissecting subs can help.

there's no fuse that's accessible from the outside. though I doubt it's the fuse.

i would recommend that you read the manual and do a reset. (or press 890 on the remote)

if the reset doesn't work, you need to contact the place you purchased it from.

If you only bought it in November, it must be under warranty. I would return it, it sounds like the unit was DOA.

If the light is on, I doubt it is a fuse. The only simple fault would be that a speaker wire has come off the speaker. Anything else would most likely be a fault in the amplifier.

Anyway stay out of it so you don't void the warranty, and return it for a new one.

I see that sub has a huge complication factor attached to it. There is plenty of opportunity to make a set up error.

Have you connected your sub video output up so you can see whether the sub is active or not on your TV?

You can see whether the sub is DOA, by connecting the EQ out to LFE in and entering set up. Then the sub will play the test tones. If it won't it is DOA. If it does, then you probably have a set up error, and need to logically follow the on screen set up messages. It will even tell you on screen if it is getting no signal.

It is jack 11 by the way that should receive the input signal.

The other thing is that it states that the unit must be upright at ALL times, including shipping, otherwise damage can occur. If that is vitally important, than I would think a lot of these would arrive damaged. Did you purchase this unit over the net?

This sub was working when I had it hooked up to my rotel preamp. This just happned. So I know that it was working.

I bought it from an online reptable company. I think I am going to take it to a tweek shop to see what it is. If it is the amp ... I will be very upset as I have hardly eve used this sub!

The amp will probably cost more than the sub as a part.

Before you take the sub anywhere do these checks at least.

I would recommend reading the manual carefully from start to finish.

First make sure the sub is returned to its default settings. It is well explained in the manual.

Second, connect the Eq out on the sub to the LFE in on the sub. Then press set up. You should hear the test tones from the sub. If you don't there is a major problem, and taking it to a Tweek shop will almost certainly result in damage and voiding of the warranty. That is a sophisticated microprocessor controlled device with a lot if software.

If you do hear the tones, then go to the online screens that will tell you if the sub is receiving a signal. You will of course have to reconnect the LFE in to your preamp.

If there is no signal, then check you speaker set up menu on your preamp.

If all this is beyond you, then find an audio consultant for you, who can set it up.

If the tones don't play with the Eq out connected to LFE in, you will have to return it for warranty service, ASAP. If you do anything else, you will live to regret it!

If it is the processor, then you can contact Veldyne who will guide you on how to unmount the processor board and sent it to them for repair (you normally pay for shipping and one board is lot cheaper to ship).

Maybe if you read back some, you may find someone that has a similar problem that will direct you to testing yourself to find the answer.

It's chips with everything these days, isn't it? It is hard to get people into the frame of mind that a sub like that, is a loudspeaker on the end of a computer. But that is exactly what it is.

I did download the manual of that sub to help the OP. It is interesting that you say those subs are known for microprocessor chip problems. In the manual they have disclaimers about the quality of power, especially voltage sags causing problems.

It shows that surge protectors are no longer adequate for microprocessor driven products like that. Just like sophisticated computers they need powering from on line UPS units with response times less than 2 ms for surge AND sag. I think it is highly probable that those failures you mention are due to not using good UPS systems.

I have the Velo DD-15, and I have it plugged directly into the wall. Just no room for it to go into either of my two APC surge protectors. I've been running it since the summer, even with power outs and what not and have never had an issue with it. In either case, I'd suggest following many of the steps mentioned here already. Also, if it hasn't worked at all on your new pre-amp, try swapping it out with your old one and see if the issue remains. I somehow doubt that the Velo just up and went on strike cause you changed out a component. I would say its more likely an issue with setup.

A Word About Subwoofer Outputs
The Velodyne subwoofer is designed to operate using the full range audio signal for input when using the digital built-in crossover. Most processors/receivers have a “subwoofer out” jack that is internally filtered and designed to be used with a conventional amplifier and speaker. In some rare cases, combining both an external crossover and the one internal to the subwoofer may result in low output and increased noise. In these installations you may need to bypass the internal crossover in either the processor or Velodyne subwoofer. In some installations, simply setting one crossover to a higher frequency (such as 120Hz) will restore maximum performance. To bypass the subwoofer’s internal crossover when the unit is being fed a low pass signal from another crossover, refer to the SETUP instructions at step 14 (page 24).

Hello everyone! I bought a Velodyne dd15 from an online dealer from Wisconsin, through eBay and they also were/are not authorized Velodyne dealers so, no warranty, understood and with that said the darn thing is/was NOT in perfect condition. If I wasn't so busy last fall with remodeling my house I wouldn't noticed it sooner and I would've sent it back. What the darn thing does is it overheats waaay toooo easily and goes into a mute mode that does not show up on the monitor. It does this fairly easily after not much time, say first to maybe if I'm lucky the second song it will cancel out/shut off. It can be very irritating. whilst wanting the most from your music, it chooses to cop-out and self-mutes. I realize that it is the protection circuit doing this but what to do? does anybody have any ideas as to what is going on with it? And I guess I will need to take it in and have it repaired. any input would be awesome, thank you!
