Total Beginner Connecting 30 yr old speakers

I am a total amateur at all things audio, so bear with me. About 30 yrs ago my grandfather gutted two walnut cabinets and turned them both into speakers using what I am told was the top of the line gear at the time. Recently I came across these and want to start using them. There is a single mono input on the back which I have hooked my iPod into using a stripped phono cord and a stereo adapter. The sound quality is great, but the volume is really low. When I hook a television up the same way, the sound is barely audible. My goal is to get these speakers working with a variety of inputs using phono or rca plugs. Obviously I need some specifics about manufacturer, tolerances, etc to get started, but it's a pain to pull these cabinets apart so I'd rather only have to do it once. What sorts of data should I collect from the speaker and is there any recommended reading or procedure for going about this project?

The reason it is so quiet is because ipod and TV only put out enough power to drive a pair of headphones. The speakers your grandfather built are going to need much more power than that.
You'll need to run your ipod or TV through an amplifier. Do you have some kind of A/V receiver or stereo amplifier around?

No, not much tech lying around. I figured I'd have to build/buy some. The thing is, my iPod can run the speaker at a pretty reasonable volume when it's turned all the way up. I guess that the tv just puts out less power. Regardless, it seems like a stereo amplifier is what I need?

Yep. You can likely find one cheap ($10-$30) at a Good Will, Salvation Army or tag sale. Craig's list is good for local pick-up, but shipping costs are prohibitive for ebay to be an option.

Even though your ipod is doing it, it will surely sound better with something that doesn't have to work so hard to drive the speakers.

Thanks a lot for your help. I'll pick one up and see if I can't get it going.
