now how do i set up the surround sound? at the moment i have it connected to the TV via HDMI and a Opitical cable.

but the tv wont use the surround speakers!

I just want to be clear:

The SkyHD is connected by HDMI directly to the tv?
The BluRay player is connected by HDMI directly to the tv?
The TV feeds the AVR (surround sound) by HDMI and optical cable?

If this is incorrect, let us know.

I would attempt to hook the SkyHD and BluRay player up using HDMI directly to the AVR and then run the AVR out to the TV via HDMI.

So, SkyHD/BluRay->AVR->TV.

Also, to be clear, you say that you do have the surround sound working for the dvd player? Is it working for the SkyHD or for regular over the air (OTA) tv?

If it's not working for the SkyHD, it could be a setting in your cable box-make sure it's set to put out DolbyDigital if it's available (might also be seen as bitstream)...otherwise you may only be getting 2ch lpcm. Also a possibility, not all programming is in surround sound-a lot is only in stereo. If your AVR is set to auto detect the incoming audio signal, it may choose to play the stereo signal it receives. You should be able to defeat this by selecting the DolbyProLogic sound selection.

Correct me if I'm wrong first-then try my suggestions and clarify more if possible. We should be off to a good start.

to get surround sound you need to connect everything to Sony DAV-DZ860W receiver

to get surround sound you need to connect everything to Sony DAV-DZ860W receiver. If you connect directly to TV you will only get sound out of the TV.

IIf you have 5.1 or 7.1 coming in directly from Sky HD or Sony blu-ray it should play to the surround speakers.

You might also check with your Sony DAV-DZ860W receiver manual, it probably also has a simulated surround sound for 2 cahnnel input.

Good luck!

Yeh that is correct. sky to tv = HDMI
BluRay to tv =HDMI
TV to AVR =HDMI and Opitical.

the surround sound is working when a DVD is in the AVR.not working for sky HD i have changed the sound to dolbyD but i would have to put the optical cable straight into the sky box.

Reconnect through AVR to get surround sound!

BluRay to AVR= HDMI
sky to AVR = HDMI
AVR to TV = HDMI (don't need optical)

Just to reiterate what everyone has already said...you're running too many unnecessary connections. You can connect everything into the AVR and then run ONE connection to TV. To watch a movie or cable you'll only have to switch the AVR to correct input and not worry about adjusting the input on the TV.

Much easier to use...
