Advice on a budget HT system for a PS3?

Hello, is it possible to get a decent HT setup for under $1000 ? I have a really small living room (condo) so I don't need a lot of power but would like to take advantage of the capabilities of the PS3.

I've looked at some of the HT-in-a-box systems but none of them seem to have the HDMI capabilities that would work with the PS3.

If it's possible, I would purchase a separate AVR and speakers but my budget is tiny so I don't even know if that's possible either.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

There is nothing wrong with NOT getting it "all-at-once".

You could get a decent receiver + pair of decent bookshelves + entry/used sub at this budget.

While we rarely or never recommend all in one speaker packages, if I was to TBH I do think a lot of people could still be perfectly happy. Not me anymore, but maybe that's why I'm an "audioholic"... ;)

Try these

Don't waste your money on a HTIB. This system is very affordable and will blow away any HTIB I know of: http://www.svsound.com/products-sys-sbs_black.cfm

There are other great systems out there, but for movies, games, etc on your PS3, this setup will perform well, especially for the price. :)

Nice package, but it doesn't include AVR. Otherwise, its past budget.

OP, if you have space for a vertical bookshelf, I typically recommend getting identical speakers everywhere, or something close to it, for those on a budget.

Horiz speakers not only are more compromised, they cost more too. But, still, at your budget, you won't be able to do a full system to begin with if you buy separate brands for avr/speakers/sub etc.

I don't think the 363 even accepts audio via HDMI? (sorta like the entry level Onkyo 505). The 363 does have multi ch analog inputs which would be fine with certain other bdp's, but the problem is the PS3 doesn't have that connectivity. You need to use HDMI to get lossless with the PS3.

However, I appreciate your nice combo midcow.

OP, I think maybe the 663 is worth the extra couple hundred. It not only accepts audio thru HDMI, it has pre-outs too.

You can find less expensive subs elsewhere, such as Elemental Designs, problem being they don't look as good as SVS.

That SVS system is awesome and would only put the OP about $300-$400 over budget. :D

If the OP can make this happen he would have a system that would give him enjoyment for years to come.

Thanks everyone for your wonderful suggestions.

so many things to think about and so many options to research. Another problem I have is that there are so few shops available in my city that I could go to and do some hands-on (ears-on) listening/viewing.

So far it seems that the HTIB option is not a good choice so I am looking at going the separate receiver and separate speaker option.

What do guys think about these receivers? I would really like something that can handle the HD output from a PS3. I plan on having the PS3 and satelite tv as my only sources.

Denon avr588
yamaha 363 or was it 663
Onkyo 605

Or perhaps there is another good choice considering my budget coonstraints? Again, I don't need a lot of power since my room condo is so tiny.

Thanks again!

Go with the 663.
Ditto that - and think about Mazer's suggestion on the SVS if you can stretch your budget by three or four hundred bucks. You will not be disappointed. Even if you have to wait for it a while to get the extra cash to spend. :)

HT System

The SVS package is a great option.
Also check out the bookshelf speakers from AV123 and Emotiva in your price range.
Starting with a quality 2.1 system will have better results than a cheap 5.1 HTIB package.
