Clean your ears!

http://www.earclear.com/
http://www.doctorhoffman.com/wax.htm

Make sure that you dont have too much wax built up, it can affect your hearing. My doctor recently told me I needed to do this.
These two sites detail what to do, but the main gist is to take either warm water or warm water with a little peroxide and flush your ears with it. What I hear is most effective is to take the warm water and put it in your ear and lay down with that ear facing the ceiling. Leave the warm water in there to soften the wax before you do your actual flush with peroxide or an ear syringe.

Also you can buy cheap ear cleaning kits at places like Walgreens, CVS and the superstores.

Do this too often and you'll get an ear infection.

Thanks for the links. I've had trouble with wax before. I found the concept of "candling," or rather the concept that anyone would actually do it, rather interesting.

I just periodically crank up the PC-Ultra and shake the wax out. ;)

ear canal robbery

70 bucks for a 2 dollar syringe? What are they smokin'? I'd be happy to sell anyone on this forum a syringe to clean out the cobwebs for a much discounted rate! the low low price of $30. That's only a 14 fold profit for me-- a nice margin and fair, don't ya think? ;)

crazy!

Lets not "discount" the fact that you'd be selling them an EAR INFECTION!

Can't stress this more.... infection, which isn't pleasant, and actually makes listening to music, worse.

I second Adams idea of just shaking the wax loose with your sub(s).

Sheepey is right, if done too frequently it will make you susceptible to infection. But I assumed that any audioholic worth his name would listen to music loud, and loud noises increase wax production past regular levels. After my ears were cleaned I could hear highs so much better. I love it! :D

Ear candling is another way of cleaning out your ears with no risk of infection. You can buy a kit at your local heath food store of choice. You can also pay to have it done by a doctor. I have never done it but supposedly it does not cause any pain or discomfort.

A little mineral oil is what my doc suggested. I had huge chunks of wax in there and it was interfering with my hearing. There was no suggestion of any risk of infection with this method.

She actually suggested I do this occasionally (like maybe once a year??)

Candling is pure B.S.; it's the sound system equivalent of Shatki Stones.

You can prevent an ear infection by flushing the ear with white distilled vinegar after the process. The vinegar makes the environment non-favorable to bacteria growth. I further follow the process by drying my ear with cotton swabs; but inserting cotton swabs in the ear generally is not recommended for the average person due to a number of reasons.

Very bad advice as it is one of those medical voodoos out there.

Save that basic kink for other medical voodoo out there

nothing smaller than your elbow should go into your ear!

On this occasion, and many others, my mother is correct. Nothing smaller than your elbow should go into your ear! Q-tips, if inserted into the ear canal, end up pushing the wax towards the tympanic membrane. Over time, this builds up and reduces your ability to hear. So, if you can get your elbow to reach your ear, go for it. Otherwise, just let the warm shower water gently run into your ears to help keep them clean. And for goodness sake clean your belly buttons out every once in a while! (Ok, that was unrelated, but as a surgeon, I've seen some uber-nasty crud livin' la vida loca in there!) -- There. this thread has officially burned itself out, on that disgusting but painfully true note.

This is true under normal circumstances. But, my circumstances are not normal. :)

Good point cutter. Just like ear wax can interfere with the high end, nasty belly button crud can absolutely interfere with the subsonic regions. It's a major cause of muddy bass ;)
