I am looking to build a 2.1 system for music listening purposes only. Could anyone suggest a setup that would cost under 700 dollars?

I was thinking about going with a complete JBL venue system.

-A pair of JBL Venue Series Stadium 8-Inch 3-Way Speaker
-A single JBL Venue Series SUB12 12-Inch 500-Watt Subwoofer
-No idea on the receiver.

There must be better deals/products out there, which is the reason why I ask. I do not know too much about home audio.

For a music system only, the JBL Venue speakers would be some of the last I would consider.

Are you looking to spend $700 on just the speakers? Or receiver too? Is your budget flexible? Will this system be used for critical listening, or back ground music? What type of music?

I agree with mazer here regarding the JBL's. Personally, I would go for the Paradigm Studio 20 v.4's or the Ascend 170's. Many claim the 170's are just as good as the Studio 20's which is an awesome deal if this is true. Was going to go with the Ascend speakers myself, but got such a good deal on my Polks. We do need, however, a bit more info as mazer has already asked about.

Cheers,

Phil

I actually would like speakers that are good for a full genre of music

Mostly Electronica and Rock.

The primary environment would be in small 12'x12' room, however occasionally I would want to be able to take them downstairs and put them in my living room when I am having a party. They will be for critical listening.

I would prefer if everything was under $700

but if being flexible is better I'm willing to spend more money.

Thanks for the Replies

I am going to list several choices for a 2-channel system in different budgets.

Amazing sound quality. Highly recommended for 2-channel system.

SVS MBS-01 - Bookshelf

These are an excellent speakers for the money. Great sound quality for a budget tower. And on sale makes that much better.

AV123 x-mtm Towers

One of the best budget speakers on the market IMO.

Ascend Acoustics
CBM-170 SE BOOKSHELF

You could get away without a sub with the SVS, and AV123 speakers unless your listening to Snoop Dogg.

It seems that the SVS and AV123 speakers both like power, and can handle it. So I would suggest a receiver with pre-outs in case you decide in the future to run an external amp.

Do you want a Stereo receiver or a Home Theater receiver?
