I need something to pass the time in the evenings and can't wait for the release of Dawn of War II and Starcraft II(looks like it's going to be bad-*** btw).

What would be your recommendations given what's available right now? I am thinking about getting the lastest in the DOW series, Dawn of War 40k: Soulstorm or maybe Empire Earth III?

in the absence of new games, I play the old ones

Dune 2 / 2000 (dune 2 is great with the trainer cheat ... you can call in ornithopter strikes every second)
Battle Realms (i'd say this was a timeless game)
Dawn of War (gets old once you finish the game) same for LOTR games.

Then there's of course the ultimate standard which is Starcraft Brood War.

Civilization?
I played an early one, maybe the first one a couple years ago and it just didn't click for me. I broke down and ordered WarCraft III but am still open to suggestions, I'm getting ready to replace my little 80gig HD in my laptop with a 320gig so I'll have plenty of room.;)

Warcraft would be the obvious one IMO. I wasn't crazy about Civ either, though a new one is now in development and headed to the PS3.

Company of Heroes- a more "realistic" RTS

World in Conflict- a different take on RTS

C&C 3 - fast and crazy RTS

The Civ demo came out on PSN, last Friday night I think. It is interesting so far, but kind of short.

Haven't tried COH, may give that a go, thanks for the reccomendation!

Tried World in Conflict, didn't care for the game play. I guess I like more of the old fashion RTS.

Played and beat C&C 3.....a couple times.:D

I enjoy the WWII theme and the more tactile game play.

A nice benefit is they allow you to play LAN games with one copy of the game. I don't understand why more PC games don't do this (I know why, $, but it is the same as playing local multiplayer games on the PS3 or 360 with just one copy of the game.)
