Subdude or Gramma???

Any members here own or have owned the Subdude or the Gramma? If so, does it really enhance the LFE??? I just recently purchased (2) Outlaw Audio LFM-1Plus subs which are down-firing subs. As such, would the Gramma improve things for me?? Or, does it enhance the sub better when it is placed on hardwood floors? Feel free to elaborate what your experience(s) have been or continue to be. Thank You.

Cheers,

Phil

Also, does the Gramma basically do everything the subdude does? The reason I am asking is that the Gramma will fit my sub almost perfectly. Is one better than the other? Thanks once again.

I don't own either although I've investigated them and am considering purchasing one just to try it out (it's an inexpensive little 'tweak' which may or may not do anything but costs little to try).

The only difference between the SubDude and the Gramma is size, with the SubDude being the smaller of the two. A few years ago Secrets did a review of the Gramma and it was mostly positive IIRC. Most people buy something like that in an attempt to limit bass going through walls and floors and disturbing others. Bass will go through pretty much anything given its very long wavelength but I think the reviewer noted that it did seem to help a wee bit.

Thanks for the info. The Gramma will fit my new subs perfectly. I may get one just to see how it does. If it really helps, then I will get a second. Appreciate the info.

Essentially the SubDude is made to Isolate the Sub from the floor so there is no transmission of vibration to the structure....

You could easily use any thick soft rubber compound or foam rubber just as easily.

Maybe you would like to try something you can get for cheap at the store first.
I have used both the foam that the sub came packed with and put it under there for testing and It did just what I wanted it to do... Or you could go find some excerize mat that is of a soft rubber compound and cut it and fold it if necessary to get it off the floor. Easily found at a local Dunhams or something like this.... http://www.karatedepot.com/tr-ma-25.html

I used something just like that as well and It worked great...

So, did you just wrap it over some MDF??? If so, did you use 3/4"?? I can get some Dynamat or Stinger Road kill very cheap. Would that work just as well warp? Heck, I think I still have some scrap MDF at work that I could use. Maybe paint it black and then cover with Dynamat or Road Kill. Mind to post a few pics if you can? It would be much appreciated.

No Dynamat is too dense.... and sticky... yuk...

And I didn't wrap that stuff around anything, just cut it up into large squares and fold it up and slide it under there... you won't really even see it if you don't make it too tall... Like a big rubber sponge type thing... soft and absorptive to the vibrations...

for $20. its worth it for you to try on the cheap.

Yeah, why not. After all, you mentioned the word CHEAP-there is something about that word that appeals to me in a big way. :p:p I will look into it when I get the time as things are just crazy right now. Lots going on and I am really worried about my MOM. Thanks warp for the advice.

I'm using the Auralex Subdudes under my subs. The only problem is their fairly small. It takes two (2) to fit under each of my HSU VTF-3HO's. But they do help quite a bit to isolate the subs from the floor. The main thing I noticed was the sudden lack of things vibrating in my house. But I did not lose bass. The VTF-3HO's do not have bottom drivers or ports. So the Subdudes do not come in the path of any output. I have used one under my HSU MBM-12 with good success, but I took it out because it raises the height of the devise it's under. I just couldn't live with the added hieght since the MBM sits behind reclining seats.

They sell them here :D

Thanks for the link Major. With the LFM-1Plus being down-firing how would the SubDude work with it? Would it create a problem for the driver while it is reaching Xmax? What about the ports since they too are down-firing??? Appreciate the help.

I'm using a GRAMMA under my sub. I have an old, kind of uneven hardwood floor, so even with my sub's big rubber feet I could tell I was losing some bass by the sub just rattling around on the floor. I was iffy on the GRAMMA as I'm of the opinion that it's slightly pricey for what it does, but I have to say it does its job well. My floor doesn't vibrate anymore, my neighbors are happier with me, and the bass feels tighter. That, and it has a handle on it that lets me easily slide the sub over the floor, which is a godsend whenever I'm moving my sub around...if you can DIY a good solution for cheap that's probably best, but if you're like me and can't put anything together without it randomly exploding, then I'd say a pad like this is a good investment.

The HSU MBM-12 is downward firing. No problems.

The base that the sub sits on is actually hard MDF board. This is then isolated from the floor with acoustic foam.

You should go ahead and do their free room analysis:

Wow major thanks for the links. I will do their free room analysis as soon as I re-do my ht room. My second LFM-1Plus will be here next Wednesday. My plan is to completely re-do my room and put in my new tv stand in. It will then be easier to integrate my second Plus sub. I will submit the forms and will also send some pics for them to analyze as well. Really appreciate this major.

Yeah, I am not too handy working with wood. Looks like I will probably be getting (2) Grammas for my LFM-1Pluses. Appreciate the info.
