I have just mounted my Panasonic 42in Plasma over my Fireplace. Also just got Directv with HDDVR Nice! :D My challenge is there is no room to place a center channel speaker. I have read about the phantom center channel. Also the fireplace wall is made of large stones. How is that going to impact sound.

Is there a specific av receiver that does the phantom better than others?

Would I benefit from Floorstanding speakers or would bookshelf still work?

Budget for the two speakers would need to be under $500. Ideally I would like two bookshelf speakers under $300, but without a center should I go for floorstanding?

Can't wait to buy the PS3MGS4 80GB bundle.... I am going to be broke.

Pretty much any multichannel receiver you buy these days can do phantom center.

The Cambridge Audio S30s are great book shelves for $219 plus shipping. But you will prabalby need a subwoofer around $400 , either SVS or Hsu, to get the low frequencies!. Most towere would get a little lower frequencies, but unless you spend more than $500 for fronts you would still need a sub for full range.

How much, if any, were you planning on spending on speaker stands? Just making a point. :D

Jostenmeat raises a good point. You need to purchase stands for the bookshelves. Will the stands be part of your $500 budget? I would go with either on walls if the speakers are going to be strictly for home theater or move to a tower configuration if you plan on using the speakers for 2 channel as well as home theater.

Saturday Audio Image T45 Tower

If I was going to buy the speaker stands, I assume the PSB T45 towers make more sense based on the comments. They are priced nice and I might stop by to listen to them.
