Hi Guys,

What brand of headphones do you guys suggest, that would give me the most bang for the buck? I plan using them for some late night gaming. =)

I have a pair of Medusa headphones that are 5.1 with a microphone. I like them for gaming, but they are best used with surround sound sources. Do you plan on just connecting a pair to your receiver's headphone jack?

But, to the headphone jack? If your receiver has pre-outs, you could use those to connect to a set of surround sound headphones that people normally use with PCs (like the Medusa set that I use). Just curious.

Oh I think I'll jus be happy with a regular pair for my gaming. I don't really need stereo surround with my headphones. Thanks for the rec tho. =) What regular brand would you recommend?

I'll defer to others here about regular headphones. I have some Sennheiser earbuds that sound pretty good and were about $60. My brother has some upper end Sennheisers and really likes them. He also recently bought some earbuds (forget which brand, but they were about $300) and thinks that they are phenomenal.

Based on my (considerably more extensive as compared to the average poster-including my actual measurement/analysis and real-time linear miced to live source comparisons) considerations , I'll suggest the Sony MDR-7506($100) for 'most bang for the buck', as you put it. But, only if what you value is accurate sound and build quality/durability. It is superior, objectively, to anything I know of, considering these aspects, until you get to 2x or more price range - and then it is still physically made better than most that cost much more. It was designed to be a durable pro audio tracking/monitoring headphone, and has been one of the most popular ones around for the last 20-25 years or so.

If what you value is coloration or the highest comfort level, then there are better choices.

I can tell you right now that 5.1 headphones are a joke. The best for your money depends on your price range, desired isolation, sound signature, etc... Tell us what you want in a headphone, and how much your willing to spend.

I disagree. It depends on what you're after. I happen to really like mine. Do they bring out the nuances of that artfully crafted classical masterpiece? No, but they are quite nice for localizing voices and sounds within games.

For the money, I garuntee you can get a normal 2.0 headphone with better 3D imaging and soundstage than a 5.1 set. Look it up on www.head-fi.org.

To each his own. I've never heard voices behind me with a 2.0 set of headphones, but I have with my 5.1 set. I like them, and that's all that I was saying. Plus, they have a good quality microphone on them, which works for me and how I game.

If these are just for gaming, I'd get the Koss KSC-75 clip ons. You can get them for less than $20 and they truly sound very good for the dirt cheap price and are super light and comfortable for long-term sessions. They're meant for portable use, so the cord isn't super long and you'll need an adapter to the reciever. They also aren't headsets, if that's important to you.

They aren't super-durable, in the sense of cramming them in your pockets or the bottom of a bad, but for sitting and gaming they'll be fine.

My Creative soundcard has a very passable "fake surround' mode in normal headphones, by the way.

a few suggestions on conventional stereo headphones, depending on your budget.

Sennheiser HD-280 - decent inexpensive closed back headphones, comfortable for extended wear

Sennheiser HD-580/590/595 - very nice higher end headphones for serious music listening. Open back design, so someone sitting very near would hear some sound from the headphones.

AKG-K701 great headphones

do a google search on these cans from Sennheiser or AKG and look for sale prices - often they are on very good sales from dependable internet dealers like amazon.com or jr.com or frys.com

I'd use caution taking advice from a majority of the users there. The belief in "snake oil" products runs deep through many of it's members.

For $10, probably a very good choice. Lots of people like these for a good "cheapie" model. Haven't heard them myself.

That is indeed an excellent price, but your probably gonna want to upgrade to a better set soon. Congrats on your new cans!
