what features do you want your new CD player to have?

if you are looking for SQ upgrade, you might be disappointed because since CD's are digital, there's almost nothing left to mess up.

If you want an audiophile CD player.. Onkyo has one and its a single disc unit. It received great reviews from stereophile magazine. J and R currently has it on sale for $480 Onkyo DX-7555. Weighs 17 lbs!!

A good 5 disc SACD/CD player is the Sony SC-DC2000ES.. on sale now for $229 from JandR!!

Well my sony is around 15 years old and still works good but thought I might get some SQ improvement with a newer one or possibly going to A I-POD/MP3

yeah, 15 years is quite long ... wow!

anyway, i have a dedicated CD player (Denon DCD685) that I now find totally obsolete now that I have ripped all my CD's to an external hard drive played by my PS3. incredible actually, no more switching CD's (since i'm pretty fickle with what I listen to ... i start a song, realize i don't feel it and switch immediately to the next one)

in short: look into getting a PS3/external HD combo

Ya its so old you have to push a button and this arm pops out and you have to crank it to open the cd tray :p just kidding :D Seriously though it still sounds pretty good but that PS3 might not be a bad option. I just realized to that my sony blu-ray player actualy plays cd's and mp3 formats so I might have to give it a try .

I like hard drive storage as a way to go, but just be careful not to overcompress the music if you go that route. I rip my CDs as uncompressed audio. It takes more hard drive space, but I think it's worth it. My brother didn't believe me and would rip at 128kbps to 160kbps, until he bought some good headphones...now he believes me.

Your receiver has excellent DAC so don't go overboard on a cd player and use the receivers DAC's instead. Just use the digital connection and merely utilize the new Cd player's transport.

Ya I just downloaded a album off of I-Tunes and dont know what I did but it plays on my sony blu-ray player and my antique Sony cd player but it sounds incredible so I probably wont be upgrading mycd player anytime soon and just save up for adp590 rears and upgrade my sub. BTW THE SUPER BASS JAZZ ALBUM with Ray Brown and John clayton sounds incredible on my Paradigms. Any of you like jazz with a little bass this albums for you :D A big thanks goes out to SoundMan for the tip thread about the Album .

Digital to analog conversion. The information on a CD is digital, but it needs to be converted to an analog signal before being sent to your speakers. Because your receiver does that digital-to-analog conversion well, you don't need to spend a lot of money to get a CD player that also does it well (you will only use the conversion in one of them, receiver or CD player).

DAC refers to the digital to analog converters. Since your cd player is fifteen years old there are not any digital coaxial or optical connections. On newer cd players even lower priced units connections for an optical is commonplace. If you replace the cd player merely utilize the optical connection and the digital to analog conversion will be done by your receiver rather than your cd player. Hence, an expensive cd player is rather unneccesary.

So then if I want to just use my Sony blu-ray player to play Cd's that runs Hdmi to my reciever that should do the trick until I decide to get A new cd player then I can run a optical/digital output to my receiver . I think I understand now , Thankyou
