Do you really expect Apple to go out and tell consumers the cons of their machines? All companies advertise this way, Apple just happens to be really good at it.

All companies do not advertise this way. The really good companies let the products speak for themselves. Yes Apple is good at advertising but so is Bose. I am not saying Apple is Bose but their advertising is misleading. If their products are claimed to be so good do they really need to advertise in this manner? That is what I am asking. They can at minimum tell you what is so different about their machines that makes them better to P.C's.

I am still looking for Apple's next frontman for their commercials to be Triumph, the Insult Dog.

"Windows Vista, Windows Vista is good for me to Poop On!!!!"

This basically sums up all their commercials since vista has retailed.

Have you ever watched a Pepsi commerical? Or a Miller Light commercial? Or seen any advertisement for DirectTV? All of these companies disparage their competitors- whether it's Coke, Bud Light, or cable tv. I think you're being a bit naive by saying that companies "let products speak for themselves." BMW says it's better than Mercedes, Aleve claims it's better than Tylenol & Advil, and Bluray claimed it was better than HD-DVD.

And if you listen to many of the Apple commercials they do talk about why their product is better. A lack of viruses, user friendliness, and yes- a SUPERIOR operating system. I don't think you'll find any computer user (except maybe for Bill Gates) that will claim Windows Vista is better than OS X. Windows Vista was a MAJOR bust- and if I'm Apple I'd be stupid not to take advantage of it. When your major competitor blunders big-time you jump right on it. Right now, the best way for Apple to tell you their product is better is by telling you that Vista sucks.

You clearly did not understand a thing.

Saying your product is better than your competitor is a thing. Bashing your competitor to make your product appear better is a sin.

My friend, I will never tell a lady that you have a small d*** just to give me better chances of getting laid. That is a mean way to achieve a goal and does not give any credit to the said "winner".

I bet if Monster was doing all those same commercials on other brands you would be ranting against them as I speak.

Yes other companies do this as well but apple takes it to extremes where it becomes slander. Pepsi might say in there advertising that in a blind testing 9 out of 10 people perfered Pepsi over Coke. IMO their advertising is very misleading especially in dealing with the nature of imperfect information facing consumers when purchasing a computer. Their ads do not tell you anything about their machines.

Bashing a competitor is a "sin"- could you tell me where in the Bible I can find that? :D

Seriously though- when every public review of Vista has been negative and every public review of OS X has been positive, please tell me how it's a bad idea for a company to point that out. Do you really believe that if the situation were reverse Microsoft wouldn't be doing the same thing?

Slander is a legal term which gets greatly misused by the general public. The official definition of slander is:

"is the communication of a statement that makes a false claim, expressively stated or implied to be factual, that may give an individual, business, product, group, government or nation a negative image."

One of the defenses against a slander claim is factual information. When you have multiple reviews stating that OS X is better than Vista (I have not seen one that is in the reverse), it is not slander to print an advertisement saying that OS X is better than Vista. In fact, in these relevant advertisements Apple quotes sources!!

I won't argue the fact that it would be great if all advertisements told you in detail about the products being advertised, but they don't have to. In Apple's case you can claim that their method of advertising is smug and elitist, and I won't disagree, but it's also been extremely effective.
