Speakers Came Today.... what CD Player, which cables, PS3 question...

Have not yet done ANY cable research.

Yamaha RX-V663 Receiver
Paradigm Studio 60s
Paradigm CC590

Any recommendations? I want good cables, but I've found that these things can get silly expensive. What's an affordable cable that can do a decent job with this equiment?

Also, I've been thinking about getting a PS3 for blue ray, DVDs and and music (as well as some gaming). Where's the flaw in this logic, as I'm sure there is one. Do these things do CDs okay, or am I better off getting a dedicated CD player? If so, what's a good CD player for music?

Thanks

For all of your cabling needs: www.bluejeanscable.com  Affordable AND great quality.

PS3 is definitely a good choice for Blu-ray, but for CDs I might look at a separate player. Not because the quality isn't good from the PS3, just because I'd rather not have to have the PS3 running all the time just for CDs, though you could simply rip the CDs to the hard disc and play them from there as well.

For the cables www.bluejeanscable.com is a good choice...they are an internet direct company thats sells well built cables at competitive and affordable prices (I am a happy owner, all my speaker wire and interconnects are from them).

IMO, there is no flaw in this logic. I see no problem in using a PS3 as a c.d player. Actually depending on your budget a PS3 is a very good choice because you will get a blue ray player, SACD player and c.d player all in one.

Almost any cable designed for a specific purpose will work for it. You would have to go pretty cheap to have a problem with a cable. Many here buy from www.monoprice.com, which seems to have some pretty good prices. I have often purchased from www.partsexpress.com, though they also sell overly expensive wires.

For speaker wires, read this:

http://www.roger-russell.com/wire/wire.htm

In almost all cases, spending more for a wire gets you poorer, but not better sound.

Regarding CD players, some years ago The $ensible Sound compared an RCA CD player they got for less than $100 with a model that cost over $1000. They did "blind" listening tests, and NO ONE could hear any difference between the players. If you want something other than your PS3 for playing CDs (there is no need), you can probably go to a thrift store and pick up a player for very little.

I could be wrong, but I don't think the 40GB PS3 will play SACD's.

Yes you are correct, the 40GB model does not support SACD, however all the other models will.

I like how its always one product against another that paints the gigantic picture that ALL products sound the same. This is simply not the case. Just because something is expensive doesnt mean its any good. And just because something is inexpensive doesnt mean it isint any good.

Keeping on track though you may want to check out the Oppo universal players. You can play DVD and just about any other cd you can think of in them. The least expensive one runs about $170

There have been cases where a difference has been heard between CD players that were level matched and listened to blind. In all of these that I know of, it was always one of two things:

  1. One of the CD players was malfunctioning.
  2. One of the CD players was willfully designed to alter the sound. In other words, it was not simply reproducing what was on the disc, and was, in a manner of speaking, purposefully malfunctioning.

There may be cases that do not fit with either of the above, but I have never encountered them. If you know of even one case in which players were level matched and listened to double blind in which one of the above was not the case, please provide a reference to it. Typically, not only do people not listen blind (and therefore bias and the placebo effect can have full sway), people also typically don't level match, and then they won't sound the same. Judging that way is foolish, however.

For playing CDs, the Oppo players are unnecessary. They are, however, good for playing a wide variety of discs, and the better ones are good at converting from PAL to an upconverted signal @ 60Hz (what most U.S. TVs can handle). They are easy to make region free, and play SACDs and DVD-Audio discs, as well as a variety of other things (see Oppo's web site for what else they play). Judging from the on line professional reviews, the Oppo DV-983H is the best DVD player ever made (for those who can use its HDMI output). It is certainly the best DVD player I have ever used.

Definately check out BlueJean cable. I was always one of the guys who bought stupid expensive cables... just because. I got my speaker wire, my optical and HDMI cables from BlueJean and I am thoroughly pleased. Not to mention, they great to do business with. (I feel I should actually confess that all my RCA interconnects are Monster 1000m series cables. They are artifacts from my prior system and since I spent a ridiculous amount of money on them, I figured I use them in the new setup. This won't get me banned will it?)

I purchased the OPPO 980H about 2 weeks ago for about $140 refurbished from OPPO on Ebay. I'm totally impressed with the player. It's absolutely a no brainer.

I don't know if this has occured to anyone else, but there is more to a CD player then how well it will play a CD. Most users that purchase a higher end CD player are paying for better reliability and also features that a cheap CD player doesn't have. Yes, you can find a $20 CD player, but it will probably break within a year. That same cheap player is also not going to have certain connection options and features that higher priced models will have, such as analog for SACD and HDMI support. I've also noticed alot of these players have very good internal decoding and processing in case your receiver does not support it. This is a very nice feature and worth the money. I think the best thing to do is find a player that does everything you need at a reasonale price. A good example is the Oppo players. They have about all the features you need and are sold at a reasonable price. :)

New PS3 80GB should be out mid to late June. They are hard to find right now
It's not new, to my knowledge it's been held back for the MGS4 release. They stopped shipping them some time ago with Motorstorm and have been stocking up apparently for the big push.

First of all, one can occasionally get a "respectable" CD player for next to nothing. I bought a Marantz CD player at a thrift store for $20, and it worked great, and looked almost new. I ended up selling it for a profit, because I had too much equipment.

Second, there is absolutely no way a high end CD player can be reliable enough to warrant the extra cost. An inexpensive player can last for several years. One that costs 5 times as much should last 5 times as long. But that is unlikely to be the case.

Third, by all means, buy according to the features you want. No one ever said that one should not.

Fourth, the Oppo players are not "high end" CD players. They are DVD players that happen to also play CDs, like pretty much all DVD players. And they are not even that expensive for DVD players (check out the higher end of the Denon line to get an idea of what a "high end" DVD player may cost). Certainly, if one wants something that can play DVDs, SACDs, DVD-Audio discs, or any of the other formats the Oppo players can handle, they can be a great choice. I recently bought the Oppo DV-983H player, and it is, by far, the best DVD player I have ever used. I unreservedly recommend it for someone wanting great DVD performance (if they can use its HDMI output). Indeed, its performance for every type of disc I have tried with it has been superb. But if all one wants to play are CDs, then it would be a waste of money, and would be more complicated and feature lacking than what a typical ≈$100 CD player could do. For about $100, one can get a new CD carousel 5 disc changer that will have every CD player feature that you will find on an Oppo, plus a few other CD player features you cannot commonly get on any DVD player.

To be blunt, if one is only wanting CD playback, all of the Oppo players would be bad choices, as they cost more than one needs to spend, and have a poor feature set for CD playback. But if one wants to also play other kinds of discs, such as SACD or DVD, then they become very attractive options, and which Oppo would be best will depend upon what, exactly, one will play on it and with what other equipment one will be using it (as well as one's budget).

In most of my systems, I have separate CD players, because they typically load faster, are easier to use, and are more feature intensive (for CD playback options) than multi-type disc players. They can also be had very cheaply. Of course, they are unnecessary if one already has something else that will play CDs (like a DVD player). In the case of the opening post of this thread, Panhandler801 said that he (or she) already has a PS3, which can play CDs. So there is no need for Panhandler801 to buy any CD player at all. However, if one is desired, there is no need to spend much money on it to get all of the features Panhandler801 is likely to want for CD playback.

I bought locally and got what I believe is probably the higher end of a fair price. Didn't want to go online... just too much money for me to not have the face to face exchange, you know?

Two of the little pegs on my CC590 grill were broken off and left in the speaker when I unboxed it, so right there hopefully the local guy will be able to help me out.

Still don't have any cables, so no verdict on the speakers yet.

Ya like I said I bought locally to and at the higher end of the scale also. They just dont like to negotiate On these Paradigms but trust me the longer you have them the more it wont matter because you'll like them more and more everyday, what I real like is the detail even at lower listening levels . I just wanted to try to get a better deal on my rears . If its a good dealer and it probably is they should probably take care of that cover for you I just wouldn't wait to long to tell them . The center channel the way the cover hangs off the sides "at least on my cc690" you have to be real careful or they'll snap the pegs if its hit hard enough. But im surprised that it happened shipped because there not mounted usually when shipped so it must of took a pretty hard hit in the box, but regardless good luck and hope they fix it for ya because there probably not cheap.

Hmmmm. Interesting. My 60s were shipped grills off, but the 590 came in plastic, in box with styrofoam on ends, BUT with grill ON. I sure hope they didn't stick their demo in a box and call it new, or anything like that. I guess I could probably call Paradigm with a serial number and get a manufacture date, or at least a ship date.

Ya I would definately check it out. Let us know what happens, maybe they ship the 590 different then the 690 though because the grill on my 690 is almost as big as my 60's .
