I just bought a new reciever a yamaha 6180 and read you can have to sets of front speakers an a center. I was wondering if the extra set of fronts make that much of a differance?

Are you asking about 2 left, and 2 right speakers totaling 4 speakers for your mains?

That sounds like overkill unless you are in a HUGE room. I have not heard your speakers but unless they are small I would assume they are fine...

They are front surrounds

Front surrounds are smaller speakers to enhance the sound depth. One of the vendors Yamaha , I think, calls them presence speakers. The a standard component of a 7.1 system

If it's not too much trouble, I say give it a try and see what you think. It's really about what you like. If I had a Yamaha that did it, two spare speakers, and any motivation (that's really my downfall right there), then I'd hook it up just to find out.

I agree with Adam. Sure, it's a gimmick but a gimmick that just may be pleasing. I have no experience with Yamaha and the presence channels but if I did own a Yamaha with that capability, I'd try it just for the heck of it. At the very least you can come back here and tell the rest of us whether it is awesome or just plain useless.

yup, aside from being placed higher than the mains, they're further back.

it's important you follow the manual instructions on the presence speaker placement, then report back to us :)

yes, this is an AYE for you to try it out.

I used to have a Yamaha DSP-A3090 Integrated Amp that also had front "surround" speaker output (it's a Yamaha thing). I tried with and without and it's basically just an effect.. works well with all the trillions of DSP modes Yamaha receivers come with.

You either like it or you don't but is certainly worth a listen.

You can also use the presence channel as extra rear surrounds (matrixed 7.1). I'd prefer the extra two back speakers to two more in the front. Easier (and cheaper) to get two more surround speakers than 2 timbre-matched speakers to your mains...

Just to be sure here...

You are not referring to hooking what you refer to as 2nd fronts up to the B speaker connection right???

You are connecting them to the "presence / SB" connection??? Right???
