Fifth Element, Close Encounters, Blade Runner (2 for $30 at bb right now), Ratatoullie, Nine Inch Nails: Beside You In Time.

There is a movies area for this, and I believe there is at least one thread on Blu movies so far, but you might have to search for it.

I dont have a large collection.. but for best picture quality and sounds my vote is Man on Fire....

Casino royale Blu-ray has below average picture quality.. the DVD version was so bad i couldnt bare to watch it and gave it away for free.

I'd like to have Man on Fire, but it always seems to be a little more expensive than I would like. I am disappointed in Planet Earth. I got the Dave Matthews disc because my brother used to be a pretty big fan. He hasn't seen it yet, but I personally got pretty bored rather quickly (two songs, and I changed discs). However, I've heard other tunes of his that I liked, though I don't know what they are called.

Just got 5th element, have yet to watch it. I also received a few gifts from a friend, being Serenity and Beowolf on HD, and Final Fantasy on BD. I would never have bought these for myself, but I am glad I got them now. I know this is a BD thread, so I'm sorry that I interject HD time to time.

Awesome PQ with amazing color palette and richness to boot: Ratatouille

Amazing PQ, serious cinematic effect along with sound, just awesome: last battle scene of Beowolf (or roughly last third of disc).

Most accurate looking faces I've ever seen: Darkman on HD. You can see the villain's contact lenses its so damn sharp. At first I was disappointed that the colors weren't richer (since this is probably the best transfer of live action that I've seen, in my noobie's opinion) but I've been told the color palette I saw is typical of what they did to movies in the 80s.

Blade Runner is very, very good, but not as good as the above, IMO. I appreciate the work that must've gone into the re-master, but I dunno...

Casino Royale, POTC II/III are fine, but not my demo discs. There are a healthy amount of titles out there that I really enjoyed, had wonderful PQ, but just would not use for demos.

I need to get around to borrowing my friend's King Kong disc. He says the sound track will knock the pictures off the wall ... :p

Its good to hear Close Encounters is up there. Was wondering about that one.

I'm still waiting on other Pixar movies, notably Finding Nemo and the Incredibles. Also, of course, LOTR 1/2/3. Who knows how long these will take. Last I read, Nemo got delayed yet again to spring '09.

Sorry you feel that way- maybe you should come over to my place to watch it sometime!! :D

Seriously though, every review I've ever read (in addition to my own opinion) has the disc as nearly flawless when it comes to PQ. Personally, I think it's even better for AQ than PQ, but I think classifying it as below average is quite harsh.

King Kong on HD-DVD is suppose to have an absolutely amazing picture. I remember reading on one of the CES reports (07) that it was always used to showcase HD displays.

Yea... I thought that KK was the best looking DVD I ever saw. I honestly think that if all DVD's were mastered as well as LOTR/KK, that the desire for hi-def formats would have been long delayed. But... they're not!

This site has useful reviews:

Yea... I also like the consumer review rankings here. There were certain titles that used to be in "Tier 0", but have slowly moved down the totem pole as other quality transfers populate the marketplace.

p.s. I agree with Aberkowitz that Casino Royale is above average. JMO. But I do think I have other titles that make for better demo's...

I live in Canada, and we have a Future Shop electronics store and i purchased some items and decided to have them hook it up. Anyhow, they brought a blu ray dvd from Sharp it was a demo that did trailers and also did a full speaker set-up for 5.1 and 7.1. It went through each speaker testing them, they told me it was given to them from Sharp and wasn't for re-sale...but i'm going to try to get one. If i had to pick a movie for sound i'd say i robot, or kingdom of heaven.

I am with you on this one, I thought the video quality on CR was quite good. Not necessarily top tier, but close.

3:10 to Yuma has pretty good PQ and AQ.
Kingdom of Heaven - Very good PQ and great AQ
Both of the Underworlds have good PQ and great AQ.

I'd use the last gun battle scene in 3:10 to Yuma as an AQ demo reference. The bullets whizzing everywhere sounded absolutely fantastic.

I have about 20 Blurays so far, in my opinion, 2001: A Space Odyssey has the best picture (color, sharpness, etc.) of the bunch. The best music Bluray I have is Legends of Jazz Showcase with Ramsey Lewis. The track with Jane Monheit and John Pizzarelli blows me away everytime I listen to it.

I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised with the BD transfer of 2001. I wasn't expecting the picture to look so sharp, considering the movie was released in the late 1960s!
