Very basic cabling question,...

We recently bought a HD TV, a Home Theater package and upgaded our cable service for a HD converter,...each has its own manual but not one gives instructions on how to connect the three units together with the 2 HDMI cables sold to us by the TV store. (Everything has a bunch of other connection jacks on the back.)

The TV has 1,2,3,4 HDMI Inputs; the cable box 1 (no mark of Input or Output) and the Theater 1 Output.

Any clues on how best to connect these? Thanks,...

TV : Samsung LN46A650A1F
Box: Scientific Atlantic Explorer 8240 HDC
Theater: Sony DAV-HD279W

Welcome to the forum!

Would you double check the model number for your Sony home theater? I can't find that on the web. Thanks!

EDIT: I think that I found it under "DAV-HDX279W".

If you do in fact have the DAV-HDX279W, then there is no HDMI input.

Based on the manual for the home theater, here's what I suggest:

1. Connect the HDMI output from the cablebox to one of the HDMI inputs on the TV - you'll need to select that input on the TV to watch signals from the cablebox

2. Connect the HDMI output on the home theater system to one of the HDMI inputs on the TV - you'll need to select that input on the TV to watch DVDs with the home theater system

3. Connect the optical audio output from the TV to the optical audio input on the home theater system - you'll need a different cable for this.

When you watch TV, you'll set the home theater system to the TV input so that you can hear it through the home theater speakers if you want. Otherwise, you could watch cable TV and listen through the speakers on the TV.

Many TV's with built-in tuners and Toslink outputs that I've encountered only pass the audio from the TV's built-in ATSC tuner. They don't "pass-through" any other source audio, but YMMV.

In such event, you would simply run a toslink or coaxial digital audio link from each source to the receiver and use that for your audio switching.

Excellent point. Unfortunately, the only audio inputs on his Sony are a set of digital audio inputs for the TV and a stereo mini-jack on the front.

component will work just as well!

If you Sony Threater package does not upconvert optic or componenet to HDMI, you best connection for the best Picture Quality would be to use component instead of HDMI.

Component is the red, green, blue cables labled ( Y, Pr , Pb) you will also need two RCA connectors to conenct the audio red( right) left (White)

You could then connect the component and audio from "Box:" to "Theater:"
Then connect only component from "Theater:" to "TV:" Set you resolution at the highest you TV allows either 720p, 1080i or 1080p

Such being the case and my postulation about the TV is correct, he can't get there from here.

Game over.

But, if I read sony's blurb corrrectly, that Sony has the DVD player built into the unit and shouldn't require a connection TO it, only FROM it TO the TV. That just leaves the cable box and I sure hope it's digital output matches that on the Sony. With a cable box, he won't be using the TV's internal tuner anyway.

Problem Solved.

WOW!!! We're definately IMPRESSED!!!

We'll print all of these answers out and take them with us back to the TV store,....they sold us a 12' HDMI and a 3' HDMI,.....and yes there is an X in the model number of the Theater system,....sorry for leaving it out.

We have to print these answers out because we have no vocabulary when it comes to these electronic wirings, and really don't even know what they look like or what function they perform,.....

(Plus it's two old ladies that you're helping out,...)

Thanks again,...we don't work too fast so it maybe the weekend before we can let you know how things worked out,....you guys are GREAT!!!!
