Master & Commander BD

Picked it up at lunch and tried out the cannon battle scene. The DTS-HD track is VERY clear, though the mix seems a bit different than before. It was rattling everything even more than the former SD DVD version. So far, the video looks only marginally better, but I will hold of on a comment until I watch the whole thing. Color looks good, but a few scenes from that section showed some serious grain.

Yeah, your review echoes the statements from AVS. Roughly 7/10 for video, but 10/10 for audio. I was at first excited about this title, but Im not going to purchase it due to average PQ.

Too bad!

I thought the regular DVD was awesome. That beginning batttle almost made me jump out of my seat.

This is one movie that got sailing ship combat pretty much right. My favorite scene is Captain Jack is looking through his scope and sees distant, silent flashes coming from a distant fog bank. Realizing what is happening he screams for everybody to hit the deck just before the balls smash into the deck and rigging. No exploding cannonballs, but the terror of dumb iron 16 pound balls moving at you at 500 miles per hour.

The battle scene in the beginning is the only good part of that movie. I was very dissapointed after watching the whole thing.

i agree. it was an effort to keep awake the whole movie.

BUT, like skizzerflake said, it was very accurate in that naval battles/stories are like that ... boring boring boring aaaaagh boring boring boring

I liked the movie, but it is relatively slow for the most part. Like most people, I have watched, checked calibration with and demoed that scene hundreds of times but I have only actually gotten through the whole movie twice.

Anyone compare the blu-ray to the DVHS version? I watched the DVHS twice and it was awesome video and sound.

How many DVHS movies do you have, I might be interested in buying some titles you have that you don't want (just want to toy with my DVHS player with some actually digital tapes:D)?

I must be easy to please. I liked everything about it. Sound, video (DVD), story ... yep, that about covers it. Maybe the crashing cannon balls in DTS just put me in a trance. I think I bought that one as a keeper like The Matrix and Legend. You guys are awfully picky. :p

The blu-ray version of M&C is awesome, in particular the audio.
The picture is fine, with only the blacks crushed a bit, and the story is great.

All in all, a must own title. :)

I loved the audio of this movie, everything from the cannonballs smashing into the hull to the creaking of the boards or the soft tinging of the watch bell to the lapping of the water. After watching this movie it is very evident why this movie won an Oscar for best sound editing. Just incredible, and although the regulat DVD was very very good the lossless audio kicked it up another notch.

No movie with the exception of Willard (with Crispin Glover) about Rats everywhere had me looking overhead because it did such an incredible job of making the sound actually appear to be coming from overhead. When the night shift on deck is walking overhead while you watch the crew sleeping downstairs was incredible you could hear the creaking of the floorboards overhead. One of my first goto discs when it comes to Demo time.

I will like to see a Super Collector's Edition of that blu-ray title,
with a better picture quality, and zillion of special features. :)
