I have a 7.1 amp and i have seven speakers + sub.

I have:

4 x floorstanding
1 x centre
2 x bookshelf
1 x sub (adding another very soon)

i have scanned an image of the speaker layout from the amplifiers manual.

where should i position the rear floorstanding speakers?

as 'surround left/right' or 'surround back left/right'

thanks for any help.

The surrounds left/rights are probably going to get more of a workout than the surround backs, so I would suggest using the floorstanders -- not the bookshelves -- at the sides.

The surround left/right at ear level normal listening position is by far the best IMHO !

A bit off topic, but personally, I disagree. I, too, have tried having the surrounds at seated ear height, and the effect was such that they were too localizable. It's great for multichannel music (don't know if the OP is into m/c music), but not so great for movies/TV. It's generally recommended that the tweeters of the surrounds be two to three feet above seated ear height for the best effect. This might be more difficult to do as you're using floorstanders, of course. Regardless, SmoKnHot, if you find you like the sound better with the surrounds at ear height, that's what you should do!

thanks,

I can raise the floorstandings with speaker stands or i may just get some more bookshelf speakers and mount them on the wall.

The THX website instructs to raise 2 feet or higher for the surrounds so i guess i will try to do that, i am into movies and gaming more than music.
