How 'bout a plasma?

This is one of the best deals on a plasma and falls well within the $1,500 price point. Not bad for a 50".

For a little more, how about a 50" 1080p set for just $200 over budget. Not bad, and a pretty good-looking set.

Thanks soundman for both of those suggestions. I got a little more info from him today. He has direct afternoon sunlight, so basicly after work (when you watch TV) is direct light. Also hes picking up a PS3, so he wants 1080p as well. So to break it down

Good in direct sunlight
1080p
LCD or Plasma
Around 46"
Around $1500 (probably not over, but I may be able to sway him for the right TV)

Thanks again for all the help, and suggestions. This is the last update of info, so lets find him his first REAL TV. BTW, this is going to replace a 19" apex CRT, and yes that is the biggest TV in the house!!!!!

Can he put up some drapes? The reason I ask is b/c it's going to be easier to find a plasma display in this price point then an LCD. A Samsung or Panasonic plasma would be excellent at this price point. The same quality LCD will be more. Also, alot of LCD's will still have a reflective screen and if he has a lot of sunshine coming, it's probably still going to be a problem either way.

Well, I think drapes are going in, BUT there are windows higher up that they cant/wont do anything with. Its all open two storys high in that room, so you have your normal windows (which are really tall, and then have a smaller window above them) and then more windows up in the second story area. I havent been there to see how bad the light gets, but I would think that the drapes on the lower windows would be enough that if they had a non-reflective plasma, they could deal with it.

you still might be able to pick up a 768p pioneer elite in 2200 range for a 50" , and 42" 1600 range, both of which have good reflective/anti glare glass. I see reflection in mine on the bezel at times but not on the panel. For a good LCD, as soundman mentioned, the cost is gonna be over the $2200 barrier for a quality display in the size you mentioned. The Mitsubishi LT46144 46" LCD has been advertised localy where im at for 1999(last years model, but nice) but the retail price is 2600. If your advising on the purchase plan the treatments and panel accordingly

CNET does mention in their review that this set does have a fairly effective anti-reflective screen. It should help, but, I've seen this set and if there is alot of glare, you could still see it, but it does work better then some others i've seen: http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-tvs/panasonic-viera-th-46pz85u/4505-6482_7-32887121.html?tag=prod.txt.1

You can find the 50" model for around $1,800 online: http://www.butterflyphoto.com/product.html?postId=1103314&cm_mmc=PriceGrabber-_-Panasonic-_-Plasma+TV-_-PANTH50PZ85U&zmam=8564958&zmas=1&zmac=83&zmap=PANTH50PZ85U :)

BTW, this is actually one of the models I'm considering myself, due to the excellent black levels. There are tradeoffs of course, but I think it still looks pretty darn good, considering the price! :)

So he ended up with the Panasonic - Viera TH-46PZ80U. It met all the requirements, and was only a lil over budget at the local store. He is like a little kid on Christmas right now, and it looks nice as hell. Thanks for all the help (espically you Soundman) It is VERY apprciated.

Very nice choice, Sean. That set is a good deal. It is very close to the TV I mentioned, I believe. Honestly, I think all the sets in the Viera line look nice, so hard to go wrong there. Congrats! :)
