My 5.1 system speakers were linked with 18 gauge wire.

Rewired it with 12-gauge, adding banana plugs.

Turned it on: nothing.

Removed banana plugs from one speaker [front right because it was the most accessible], attached wired directly: all five speakers came on.

Can someone clue in this clueless person?

Did you check to see if there was any protective plastic sleeve inside of the banana plug? Or something that would prevent a proper connection between the cable, and itself?

Sound like you have a short circuit and maybe also an open circuit.

If you have an ohm meter (buy cheap one at Radio Shack $10) and a alrgator clip test cable (buy at Radio Shack $5) you can quickly find the problem.

It sounds like you might have a whisker hair short. Make sure there are no wire strands protruding from the bananna plug. I sound like the speaker ou disconnected might be shorting. When you got no sound , did your AVr also power offf.

Disconnect cables from speakers and AVR. At one end of on one cable put one lead of ohm meter on cable put other end on other end of cable you should read close to zero ohms if note open circuit. This checks the integrity of each cable.

If you re-read the OP you will see the upgrade was "no" sound.

Double check the connections, make sure there are no shorts and/or open circuits.

My money is on the fact that it is a short circuit, and however it is occuring is causing your receiver to go into protect mode, that is why you're not getting any sound from the other speakers.

Unless the one bananna plug he removed was the one causing the short which is my speculation.
