Not true of amps, because speakers are such beastly animals, that often require gobs of current and out of phase with voltage at that. Amps and receivers are generally bench tested with power resistors, not real world loads. Try driving a Dynaudio speaker with most receivers. We have a thread on that right now.

I thought Audioholics said that Power Current is a non-issue these days?

You mentioned the Dynaudio has a minimum of 3.1 ohms impedance.

The Definitive CLR3000 has a minium impedance of 2.1 ohms & the BP7000SC has a minimum impedance of 2.9 ohms (Home Theater Mag).

The BP7001SC has a minimum impedance of 3.3 ohms (Sound & Vision Mag).

But @ 90dB, I don't think I was able to tell any differences between the Acurus 200X3, Emotiva MPS2, or the Denon PMA2000IVR.

Bummer. Paid 1250 with taxes for this one at FutureShop, considered a deal. Wish I lived in the states just (triple underlined if I could) to get your amazing deals. You often get free shipping too.

Never saw that in Canada.

I live two miles form the New Brunswick border and many Canadians order online and have products shipped to The U.S. to a pick up address. Not sure if they pay duty or sneak the products through the border.
That price you paid is high, perhaps if you live near the border, see if there is a P. O. box type store to ship to.
Good luck with future purchases.

It depends on many factors. It may be the case for you but not necessarily for others. Consider the following example:

Speaker A
Sensitivity: 87 dB @2.83V 1 meter
Nominal impedance: 4 ohms

Speaker B
Sensitivity: 90 dB @2.83V 1 meter
Nominal impedance: 8 ohms

Speaker A is therefore 6 dB less sensitive than speaker B.
Now let's day Person A owns speaker A and Person B owns speaker B and that Person A typically likes his music twice as loud and Person B. Remember, to perceive twice as loud, SPL may have to be as much as 10 dB higher, let's say 9 dB just for ease of demonstration.

So now Person A will need an amp that could provide this extra 15 dB (3 for being 4ohm and 3 for the lower sensitivity, and 9 to make it sound twice as loud) of SPL.

Let's further assume in this same room, Person B typically needs 10W to get the SPL he likes.

Since for every 3 dB of SPL increase you need to double the power, so to get Person A that extra 15 dB, he needs to have 32 times the power that Person B needs, that's 320W. On top of this, even for non classical music you need to have 2 to 3 dB of headroom so suddenly Person A would need a 500 WPC amp.

I know I am being extreme, in order to show how quickly the power requirement goes up depending on the characteristics of a specific speaker and its owner's personal preference. In reality, even a 15 WPC tube amp can do well in a smaller room, powering not too hard to drive speakers, for individuals who know how to protect their hearing, and play their music at moderate SPL (say, around 70 dB instead of 80 or higher).

I just got mine yesterday at A&B Sound for $990CDN. Is not an online sale but an in-store. Not sure if there is one in your general area, but if there is get FutureShop to price match. Will save you a nice chunk of cash.

Worth a shot if you are within the 30days.

Yamaha RX-V1700 Volume Problems

I have a Yamaha RX-V1700 connected to Paradigm Studio 40 v3 speakers and Direct TV through component video & Audio. I've had the setup forever, but moved into a new house and after connecting everything, when I turn the receiver on it is extremely loud. Using the volume control I can get either mute or 87DB..there is no in between. Has anybody else had this problem?

I have not heard that before but if nothing else work so far then I think the next step is to do a factory reset to re-initialize the processor.

I agree, that is a strange fault. The only remedy you have is a factory reset to default and then reset your system up. If that does not work, its service time. Is it still under warranty? Is it just the Direct TV box? What about digital HDMI inputs? Have you tried hooking the Direct TV box up via HDMI?

This developing after a move has the hint of transport damage about it, such as a crack in a circuit board.

The plumbing let go that drains the washing machine water and one load went through (laundry room is on the main floor) and it rained water all over my HT setup. The Vizio, a cable box and blue ray player received the brunt of it, teh turntable and my RX-V1800 was spared most of it. My center channel and l/r main PSBs got wet as well. They're off at the insurance company now in a special room to dry off electronics. The display and blue ray player I don;t care about because prices have fallen so much for those items. I may be able to get a 55" plasma for the same price that I bought my 47" Vizio for. I'm worried about the most about my receiver and turntable. The RX-V1800 performed flawlessly with gobs of power to spare. If it goes bad, I hope they will give me enough to get an RX-A2000 which I consider to be the equivalent of the 1800. This sucks. At least I got to watch Underworld Awakening before this happened. :)

Wow...sorry to hear about that. Not that this is related in any sort of way but our display and oven went in the same week having recently returned from vaction and most recently we started orthodontal work for our kids....when I rains, it pours...no pun intended though...:(.

Sometime the timing of things....just plain sucks...but it sounds like you were somewhat lucky because no mention of other damage to furniture, carpet or wood floors? It could have been real messy.

Agreed, the Yamaha RXV1800 is a real nice AVR.

Good luck....:)

It turns out that one of the HDMI inputs was damaged and it was shorting something out causing the volume control issues. I replaced the HDMI port and now it's good. I would have never gussed it...good thing for authorized Yamaha repair facilities.
