To Upgrade or Not??

My dad just got a 60 in TV and needs a receiver. This presents me with an opportunity to give him my Sony STR-DG710 and find a new receiver.... $600 flexible budget. I just purchased DefTech BP 7006's, ProCenter 1000 and BP1.2 surrounds.

Is my current receiver adequate for my new speakers or should I consider finding something new?

AcuDefTechGuy,

Help me out on the loudspeaker post regarding center channels. Thanks.

Sure, I say get the CLR2300.:D

It was made just for the BP7006s.:)
AcuDefTechGuy, does the built in 8" sub of the CLR2300 make that much difference over the CLR2002?

I too have the BP7006's and opted for the CLR2002 to handle my center channel chores.

I don't think there is a significant difference.

Occasionally, there may be lower frequency music in the Center Channel, but not very often.

The lowest human voice (BASS) is about 60 Hz, so the CLR2002 should be just fine for dialogues. And when set as Small with a Crossover of 80Hz-100Hz, it is definitely just fine.

One case where the CLR2300 would have a clear advantage is when you are using something like a Denon SACD/DVD-A player. When set to SOURCE DIRECT, the sound goes directly from Digital (DSD) to Analog, bypassing PCM, bass/speaker management (setting every speaker to 20Hz-20kHz) and all tone/balance controls.

Another thing is, the CLR2002 has the 5.25" midrange, but the BP7006 has the 4.5" midrange (like the CLR2300). As a rule of thumb, most people recommend matching the driver sizes. It is probably not critical and most people probably can't tell the difference.

So for most applications, the CLR2002 is just fine.
...Until you get that Upgrade Bug.:D

Sound like a good Choice , but ...

I too have the BP7006's and opted for the CLR2002 to handle my center channel chores.

I had the older Def Tech B2600TLs with a ProCenter100. While the ProCenter100 sounds good (the current models are Procenter 1000 and Procenterr 2000).

The 7006 have 4 1/2 " speakers and the centers that match them in speaker size are the Procenter1000 (retail $220) and the CLR2300 (retail $649).

I like the added bass in my new towers 7002 and have a CLR3000 on order that is supposed to arrive tomorrow or Friday. I listen to 95% HD TV and DVD movies ( standard and Blu ray if they are available), so good voice is important to me!.

If yopu listen to mainly music I would stick with the ProCenter1000. However the center channel provides the main voice repsone and if you view TV and DVD movies then i would recommend getting the sub powered center for more clarity and fullness in voice dialog. In your case the CLR2300 has the same size speakers and is a perfect match.

Good Luck!

P.S. - The CLR2002 has 5 1/4" speakers and is a better match for 7002 or 7002 towers. However, it will sound very good with your 7006s if that is your final choice.

Thanks to AcuDefTechGuy and Midcow2. I didn't mean to hijack the thread from cmharris0805, but as we have some of the same speakers...

That upgrade bug is a powerful force as you know. But there is another upgrade I'm in the process of making that may take precedence over speaker and receiver upgrades.
Perhaps you've heard of the old Girlfriend 15.0 to Wife 2.0 upgrade?

Anyways, I use my system mainly for HDTV and DVD/Blu-ray (PS3) so I think the CLR2002 will work just fine for now.

Hmmmm, perhaps Fiance' 2.0 will consider buying me a CLR2300 for my birthday in June? :D After all she did buy me a 50" Sony SXRD! :D Hmmmmmmmmmm

Thanks Midcow2. Fiance 2.0 got a kick out of the whole upgrade thing and actually asked if I would like the CLR2300! Honestly, I think I'd rather upgrade my 9 y.o. Sony STR-DB930 receiver (probably to the Sony STR-DA5300ES, but the Onkyo TX-SR875 isn't quite out of the running yet) before thinking about replacing a brand new CLR2002.

And then there's the whole 2 - 3 carat diamond thing... OY!
