My advice:

None of them, yet.

The best player right now is probably the PS3. At $400, IMHO, it's worth holding out for at least a few months to see what comes along, and to see if the prices drop to a more reasonable level.

Get a Panasonic DMP-BD30 $499

Get a Panasonic DMP-BD30 $499 cost $499. Has frequnet firmware upgrades.

PS3 is a good Blu ray player if you can find one at MSRP. Many are being sold higher than list price becuase of lack of avaialability.

Or youi can wait there are some new Blu Ray players about to be released.

What are the newer generation BD players coming down the pipe supposed to do that the PS3 won't? Now that the PS3 can do DTS-HD too, why not kill two birds with one stone?

There are still plenty of 40 gig models out there for sale, it's all the same BD drive.

In a nutshell: Have a smaller price tag. (hopefully)

For a gamer, the PS3 is the end all solution.
For those of us who are not. It's to much to pay for too little.
Add to that the fact it doesn't look right with the rest of my stuff.

Better image quality, aesthetics of the unit, integrated IR (Despite the workarounds, it's still an issue!) remote control, no brainer operation like a DVD player, etc. are just some of the reasons people might prefer a standalone Blu-Ray player to the PS3.

Better image quality? I thought it looks pretty good. What do you consider bad?

If you want a stand-alone BD player, then the Panasonic DMP-BD30 is good for you.

If you want Games + BD, then the Sony PS3 40G is good for you.

Huh?
Too much to pay for the most capable Blu Ray player on the market? It's also the cheapest. What is "too little" about it? For the cash, everything else pales in comparison.
I wanted a stand alone too, but they all suck compared to the capabilities of the PS3.

PS3 is the best price and long term BluRay player, it will have IPTV and something like netflix this year too on it.

Dont let the AV snobs even try to steer you away from it for models not even released yet.

That a horrible argument against it.

.

I already stated that it is the best player currently available.

Keeping the gaming aspect out of the equation:

It's a dvd player! A four hundred dollar DVD player! And yes, the cheapest one. Tell me there is not something wrong with that picture. The only reason Sony is charging $400 for it and Pioneer, Samsung etc are charging more for stand-alone units is because they can.

My advice was to wait the game out.

My prediction : no doubt the PS3 will remain at it's current price. And arguably, given the gaming capabilities, it deservedly should. But by Christmas, don't be surprised to see a more capable player aroud the $200 mark.

No AV snob here. I hardly think it's a bad argument to advise against jumping on current technology instaed of holding out for something cheaper and potentially better.

There's no snobbery about not wanting a PS3 for your player. Some people like myself just don't like the way it looks and my/our objective and goal isn't just based purely on funtionality or what makes sense. I've said it before - if that were the case, we'd all have very different equipment than what we do right now because I guarantee you most of all our stuff doesn't not make sense for the money/reason we've bought it for.

I freely admit that the PS3 is probably the best bd player out there, but there's more to the purchase than that for some. I will likely end up being one of those people who own a PS3, a Wii, and and Xbox... AND a nice standalone blu-ray player because I just think of them as different pieces of equipment. I can turn a screw with a butterknife, but I still own a nice set of screwdrivers. Silly? Maybe... even probably. Snobby? Don't think so.

Enjoy your PS3 and be proud of your purchase... as every owner is and should be. Don't get all bent and defensive when others don't want the same equipment as you. No one is slamming the PS3 in any way.

I agree with the wait and see crowd. I plan on it. As others have mentioned, I don't care for the looks of the PS3. I also don't like the work around for the remote or the fan noise. I bought one on a deal from Wally World with 10 free movies plus the mail in rebate and sold it shortly thereafter. Bear in mind that I don't game, either, so it's a no brainer for me to wait on the next players to come out. They should be hitting shelves within a month or so. The new Pannasonic and Pioneer look particularly intresting to me.

If you are interested in the new pioneer elite player.. digital bits has a power buy of $800 for it. The player looks nice, but pioneer has decided to eliminate buttons on the front panel, and instead is using some gay touch panel sensors to activate controls. Something that will cause problems down the road (nothing beats a nice mechanical push button )

Yeah, I'm intrested in it. They are supposed to post all the specs and info first or second week of May. I'll take a close look then. FWIW, the supposed MSRP is $799. Not much of a power buy!;)
Thanks.
Now back to our regularly scheduled thread...

I'm gonna ask this again... How come no one has the new Sony's on their radar? I still think they're the coolest looking players out there.
