I have an Onkyo sr605 and have some 4 ohm mains, can i safely run these mains on this receiver?

Only at medium to lower levels of output. I would advise upgrading the receiver if you plan to drive 4 ohm speakers for your mains. Would you happen to have the make and model of the speakers?

I would get the Yamaha RX-V663, and if it doesn't have enough power you can add amplification using that receiver's preouts. (the TX-SR605 doesn't have preouts) You could forgo the amplifiers and get the TX-SR805, but I recommend putting fans on it to keep it cool and also making sure you have ample shelf space for it. Not only is the TX-SR805 very large, but it generates lots of heat and needs room to breath. Putting fans on it as well will reduce heat build up and the receiver's longevity.
