Receiver comparison

I am looking at these two receivers wanted to get feedback from people that have either units or can give input regarding the two units.
Yamaha RX-V663BL
vs
Onkyo TX-SR605
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I think people are going to need to know more about your setup to give you any good feedback. What are you using it for? What are you hooking it up to drive? What are your likes and dislikes for music and movies? These all are important into deciding what might work best.

But, if it helps, I just recently got the Yamaha and I absolutely love it!

Well not really in this case.

The Yamaha has analog pre-outs where as the Onkyo does not.
Besides that Onkyo has simply had too many reported problems to make it a trustworthy recommendation.

Of the two, Go with the Yamaha 663.

Everything looks to be equal, except for the Yamaha having the pre-outs. That gives it the nod for me, even if the price is $100 more. I replaced an Onkyo with a Yamaha, and will not go back.

As a former unhappy owner of a 605 I can tell you it has a poor digital processor. I have no experience with the Yamaha but it certainly couldn't be any worse. I would go with the Yamaha.

I have a 605 an i have not had any issues what so ever. so far it is great. they are going for $399. The bad digital processing is news to me. Mine sounds great! now having said all this in defence of Onkyo if you can get a Yamaha with pre-outs, do that. you could ad an amp later if you want, then you hae a pre/pro. The Yamaha is a better upgrad option. But I have had ZERO issues wuth my 605 (AH should review the 605)

One day when you get a receiver with a good processor come back and tell me what you think.

How are you identifying a 'good' processor? I've owned half a dozen Onkyo receivers over the last 15 years and have never had a single problem with any of them - not one.

examples, is the an opion of fact? I checked the specs with other AVR's in the price range, so give me an example of bad processing, what did it do that was bad?

I have decided to ignore the issue of this, but now the cat's out of the bag. I don't see how the Onkyo's processing could be vastly inferior to any other receiver out there. I can't hear the difference between most dacs. I know you started a thread about how horrible the Onkyo sounded to you, so please, share it with us again, how is it so inferior? How did you come to the conclusion it was the processing?

In terms of DACs and processors and specs (crosstalk, THD, freq. resp, SNR), I think Onkyo is great. For example, the Onkyo 805 has the Burr-Brown PCM-1796, which is the same one used in the $7,000 Denon AVP-A1HD pre-pro.

The only issue I see is the heat generation that a lot of people are complaining about. This prominent heat issue may not affect the short-term performance, but it may be a potential reliability issue down the road since we know that heat (especially significant amount) will destroy all physical things.

It's what happens when people feel passionately about something. I believe one way, you believe another. Neither way is necessarily right or wrong, just prefered opinions. Since we both have passion for audio, or passion for knowledge in audio, we will voice what we believe is best in our eyes. I do try to fit the criteria of the poster inquiring, but I and many others do get wrapped up in their own beliefs and ignore the needs/wants of the original poster. Passion is a disease I guess.

bnlguy, now see what you started?:D

The recievers are fairly close so I think overall you would be happy with either. I didn't realize how close they actually were until I looked at the specs. If possible try and listen and see if you can hear a difference, always the best route. Baring that if money is tight go for the best deal.
The heat issue with the onkyo made me nervous so that's why i went with the 663. I can report that after watching a 3 hour movie it's barely warm to the touch (i don't listen at crazy levels though).

Cheers,
ChunkyDark

This is twice I've seen Onkyo and Yamaha receiver questions today.

Where's the love for Pioneer? :(

Sorry, Pioneer VSX-1018 when it becomes available.:D

The Pioneer VSX-1017 doesn't process audio over HDMI, so it really isn't comparable.
