//bad karma i know
The RX-V861 is inferior to the RX-V663 in processing. They both use the same amplifier section and they both also feature night listening modes. The RX-V861 has a phono connection (I don't advise using phono sections on receivers for high fidelity phono playback, an external phono preamp is prefered. The phono input on this receiver is a convenience) the RX-V663 doesn't have a phono connection. The RX-V861 has 3 optical inputs, one optical output and two coaxial digital inputs, the RX-V663 only has two optical and two coaxial digital inputs, no digital outputs. The RX-V663 adds Sirius radio where as the RX-V861 only offers XM. The RX-V663 offers an additional subwoofer output over the RX-V861, other than that they offer the same connections.
Most people won't need or use the phono input on this receiver, using SPDIF connections such as optical and coaxial are less and less needed/common as they are being replaced by HDMI. I see no reason to purchase the RX-V861 at a higher price than the RX-V663 unless it meets a very specific purpose.
